View Full Version : I Finally Fixed My Compass.......

About 3 years ago my compass in the overhead console quit working so I did what you normally do to malfunctioning electronic devices.....I SMACKED IT and it started working again......FIXED!!

Well......yesterday it quit again and I SMACKED it again and again and again and it wouldn't stay on so I WHAMMED it and that was that....NO WORKY AT ALL!!!:argue::mad2:

Today I decided I'd try to remove the console and check the solder joints since that has been a common fix!! First of all.....those damn metal clips FORD uses must be designed to withstand a 200 MPH crash......I thought I'd never get the console off the headliner but it finally cut loose with gut wrenching sounds but nothing broke!!:)

While trying to unplug the "#@!&%" electrical plug I noticed a small black metallic piece on the seat......it was about 2mm x 5mm and paper thin with "510" printed on it so I figgered I'd best hang on to it!!

Well.....good thing I found the "510" piece since it ended up being the culprit!! It had come completely off the circuit board when I WHAMMED it and I was lucky I found it!!

Now soldering it back in place was a real trick......soldering pencil, tweezers, flux and a dab of solder and it was stuck back where it belongs...WHEW....hope it works!!

I put everything back together and plugged the electrical connector in and..........VOILA......."NW" brilliantly lit in the green window so I snapped the console back into place !!:banana2:

This was not the most fun thing I have done lately and I was damn lucky I found the little "doo-dad" (capacitor) and got it soldered back in place!!:D

What Next??

With a horror story like that, I think I'll leave mine inoperational.

I didn't use it when it worked, and I don't use the compass/thermometer on the Magnum either...

I always thought it would be great if the compass thingy actually did something usefull, like being a trip computer. It looks just like the ones that were in the 99up Super Duties that had trip computer functions.

gotcha

Yeah, that would be nice. My wife's Escape has that, she uses it all the time.

I tried to pull on mine cause it was out, as of a year ago or so.
I had no idea Ford used the 200+ MPH clips to hold it on, I would have pulled harder!

No problem.

Just need to use the special Ford Overhead Console Removal Tool.

Not too far from the truth!!!:shake:

Bradley....when you pull down on the front of the console be sure and push up on the headliner beside it or EVERYTHING will come down......NOT GOOD!!!:mad2:

The most important thing to remember is not mix up the 510 unit with 710 unit.
The 710 unit is much larger and is used to cap off the orifice where the engine lubricant goes. :D

Huge thanks to MJ for the thread.
I missed the part about the screw holding it up also, I nearly had the headliner in my lap too!
This gave me the confidence to fix mine.
The 510 resistor was pulled away from the board only on one side.
I took a solider iron and a small tool to press on the back of the resistor while I applied the iron to the TINY component.
I trial plugged it back in an saw the screen light momentarily.

I sliced open my left pointie fingie pulling on it, but it is a small price to pay to look up and see which direction I am headed!
Thanks Jack!
