OK, i have been dealing with a noise for about 2 months now and I have had 9 different mechanics look at is to figure out what the noise is and that was after i changed the alternator, belt, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and the oil. I paid a master mechanic some money to do a full diagnostics since the noise is apparently internal. The car is still driving perfectly fine. The mechanic took the valves off and did an internal inspection, and this is what he told me:

and yes this will fix the noise for sure because the problem is when the springs busted they put a side load on a system that is designed on for vertical loads there for what happened was a valve did not close flat and caused the springs to break and bed the rocker arms now with the timing chain tensioner broken it most likely was the cause of all of this because with the cam out of time the piston probably hit the valve and bent it. so the noise your hearing is the broken spring being compressed and the rocker arms moving it to the side and causing it to click every time that the valves are compressed. when its time to tear it all down i will send you pictures and show you how dirty the inside of the motor is and the whole process and the broken parts and all that so you know what is going on and that the money your spending is not some kind of guessing at whats broken.

I am in the process of buying the parts that the mechanic says I need from a member here but the cost of the parts and the labor is going to put me over $1,100. So I want to get some opinions before I buy the parts and have the mechanic do the work.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? AND AGAIN THE CAR IS DRIVING JUST FINE, I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW ALL OF THESE THINGS CAN BE BROKEN AND THE CAR IS STILL DRIVING GOOD.

if you value your car you need to park it until its repaired.

i cant hear it running therefore its hard to give you an honest answer but i would get another opinion and not just take this mech story?

A bent valve will cause a rough idle. You may also have pressure in the crankcase or intake depending on the valve and that will cause a thumping sound. For him to pull the valves off, he had to remove the head. I think you are referring to the cam followers that were loose and broke the spring?

i thought he meant the mechanic removed the "valve covers"

The mechanic told me that he moved the valve covers to do his inspection and then i had to buy new gaskets when he put them back on after the inspection. I have had several opinions 9 to be exact.

if you have bent valves, and broken springs/tentioners i would strongly consider a total rebuild.

I just dont understand how all of those things can be damaged and the car is still driving good.

Hows the idle? Generally you should have a rough idle with that damage.

The cam cover gaskets are reusable. Besides he would have told you about how hard it was to remove the PS cover so he could charge you more.

My advise is to either go to the dealer or find a Mustang shop that specializes in Cobras. This way you get the truth from someone that knows the engine ;)

Get a cylinder leakdown test done. If the valve seat is damaged there will be leakage on the affected cylinder.
