Which way do you turn the cap to loosen it at the top of the bar where you add coolant at? Is it clockwise or counter clockwise? Ive broken two extensions already trying to open it.

Counter. Get a pair of vice grips and grab it from the side on the lip above the seam, it'll come off no prob.

Skip the extention and just jamb the rachet in there.
A little penatrating oil may help?

Penetrating oil won't help. Good luck not stripping it.

Mine came off CCW with a 1/4" ratchet (no extension) after gentle heating with MAPP (http://www.finehomebuilding.com/CMS/uploadedimages/Images/Homebuilding/Departments/fhb162bs126-04_med.jpg). No vise grip marks on my plug ;)

Would an impact wrench be worth a try? you can always get a new cap but your going to have to get it out one way or another.

I wouldn't try an impact wrench.
Try some heat from a propane torch.
If you go the heating route, check the o-ring before installing and add a small amount of anti-seize.

I've heard the plug is not available alone and the crossovers are out of stock......anyone know for sure!!
It only needs to be hand tight....O-ring seals it!! I put mine on tight several years ago and thought I'd never get it off but it finally broke loose!!
Good Luck!!:D

Tapping it with a hammer might help break it loose too.

I broke 3 extensions trying to remove that thing, even with liberal doses of liquid wrench. Vicegrips finally removed it. Hold the tube with one hand to brace it and pull on the vicegrips with the other. If you hear a hiss when you do this (like I did), it means you have managed to break the o-ring seal and you will probably have to use hi-temp RTV to seal it. I welded a big nut on it so it'll definately come off next time.

I think I rapped the rachet handle with a cowhide mallet. Impact works wonders.

My ratchet broke off inside the cap, now it's just stuck in there. :(

This is one of the best solutions I have seen:

I actually bought one but was unhappy with the finish. He's sending me a new one and I expect it any day now. Stainless, too. I'm gonna polish it.

I have to join that site and 'PM" him...those are trick looking S.S. plugs!
How about a 'Group Buy'?
(Doomie, I KNOW that you will be all over a polished version!)

Once I recieve the new plug, I'll post up some pics of that. I told him that I knew people who would want these, IDK how long it takes him to make them, but AFAIK he would probably be on board....?

No issues with the hood liner that I know of, and yes, Craftsman tools are horrible in my experience

Only thing good about Craftsman tools if that they will replace them free.

A little trick that works on most anything... Tighten it slightly before you back it off.
I don't know why that works so well, but I am certainately greatfull of an old timer for telling me that years back.

Huh... Goes to show how much I know about tools. :o
They did replace my ratchet though, so I guess that's a plus. Luckily, I don't own that many tools, so I still have a chance to not build up with the wrong stuff.
What are some decent brands to keep an eye out for?

Snap-On, Kobalt, Cornwell.
Craftsman tools are OK, but there are better brands out there.
