View Full Version : What to do with the old motor?

My new motor will be here in a couple weeks and I'm trying to decide what to do with the old one, besides freshening it up. It's an MMR StreetMod 900 with all the forged goodies. New rings, bearing, ball hone to de-glaze the cylinders and she's good as new. But what to put it in?
Having had 3 Rx-7's in the past, I am thinking this in an RX-7 would be a hoot.
What would you do?

Yes it would be, specially in a early 80's model.
Or you can put it in your dd marauder.

There is a guy in my area that has an LS1 RX-7....it is wild just listening to it RUMBLE by!
Plus, with a 4.6 DOHC, you'll get better gas mileage than that 16 mpg rotary!
BYW: My brother-in-law finally sold his RX-8 because he was so tired of commuting to work in a 16-17 mpg Mazda.

But you don't buy... or shouldn't have bought the RX8 for the mileage.
It's one kick-a$$ car, lotsa of low end torque and it handles great.

True, but a light sports car with a 1.1L engine shouldn't get worse gas mileage than a 6.2L V8 in a 4,000+lb Pontiac G8.
A G8 has lotsa low end torque.
I kept razzing him about how my built 5.0 DOHC with a high stall trans in a 4,400 lb 'black taxi' got better gas mileage than his RX-8.
Rotaries are neat engines....but from an efficiency standpoint, they are thermodynamic cripples.

RX-7 will be a nice idea, but will it fit? A Chevy small block being a pushrod motor is physically smaller then a 4.6L DOHC. I think you're on the right track by putting in some obscure vehicle that nobody would suspect. :D

"Give" it to me? Yeah right!!! This one of the few places/people I know that I feel in debt to for all the skills I learned and the money I saved. I always say the world owes me, but when it comes to Marauders it's the total opposite.
I'll take it though. :D

I have heard a lot of things about RX-8s, but never, EVER, have I heard this.
As for the other comments posted, it's an effective 1.3liter, not 1.1.
And considering it turns out nearly 240 hp with that 1.3 for an extraordinarily linear power band that pretty much never peaks (unless you go way beyond factory RPM limits), I'd say it's pretty incredible.
It's a racing engine in a sports car, NO part of that is designed for economy. That isn't what rotary engines are about in general.
Peripheral Ported 4-rotor n/a race engines have been known to make more power than most FI V8s.
I love my V8's, it'll be hard when the day comes I can't drive one DD, but it's simply ridiculous to brush off a rotary engine's potential.

I stand corrected...1.3L

I'm not brushing it off, I just find it incredible that a little tiny rotary eats as much fuel as a Ferrari's 'race' engine.
And truth be told....I'd take a Ferrari engine long before I took a Mazda rotary.

55 or 56 crown victoria. Two tone white and blue. Make a real nice sleeper. Volvo is not a bad idea either.

You can always drop it in a fox body with a t56. It should make an easy 12 sec car.

It's honestly a tough call for me, there's some mystique involved with the rotary engine in my mind that makes it appealing over a lot of others. :P
However you are right, those engines run INSANELY rich, especially when boosted. It's actually not that uncommon to see straight-piped (or at least uncatted with straight-through muffler) RX-7s able to maintain a steady flame from the tailpipe when riding down a gear/engine braking. That, and backfire little fireballs between shifts.
To me, the only real drawback to a rotary engine is how quickly you can shorten its life span. The bigger the porting work = the shorter time you have before a full rebuild, generally speaking.

How about you keep it in the family and drop it in a Ranger. Tub it, lower it and have some fun hauling whatever you want.
