I am new to MMs. Is the air pump for the rear suspension fairly loud when you first start the car? I can hear it very clearly inside the car when i start it up. I'm not sure how loud it should be.

Yep, it's loud. By asking that question (most nubs do), you've now passed your nub initiation, welcome to the club.

I think that I "feel" mine more than I actually "hear" it; but yes it is very noticeable when you start the car after it has been sitting for awhile. Mine will run for about 20-30 seconds while I watch the rear lift in the rear view mirror. Depending on the load, mine will lift about 1.5-2.0 inches.

Yes it is loud. The "muffler" for it is located on the radiator support on the drivers side. It's the white plastic rectangular box with the hose attached to it.

They get louder with age...kinda like wives and girlfriends.
If yours is really bad, it's prolly close to "the big one" so don't be surprised if you find your car with the "dead body in the trunk" look some morning.
The replacement compressor from Arnott's that I installed in Phoebe is almost silent.

Sweet, that's what expected to hear. Initiation? Does this mean I have to drink a pitcher of beer with a gods head in the bottom in one go?I hope so

Mine was very loud when new and could feel it while sitting in the car.
They said the fix was placing a rubber 'mat' below the compressor to quiet it down.
Been good-to-go for 6 years now.

Drill holes in the pan to let the water drain out, which is what causes them to go bad in the first place.

Could you elaborate on this "pan"? I am a nub after all.

OK 'noob'.
:D
The pan is what the compressor sits on.

The pan he's referring to is where the pump sits. It's actually not a pan but a bucket that has one drain hole that is usually clogged. I drilled one drain hole in each corner.

Now all I have to do is find the pump!

Remove the air filter box...there are 3 nuts on vibration isolators, 2 on the MAF side and one in front, way down low. Wallah, there's the suspension compressor. Access to its mounting hardware is from underneath.

I notice last several times I turn the MM off I do not get the air release sound under the hood. I filled up with gas a few days ago and didnt notice the pump comming on to adjust for the fuel. Also sitting at a red light days later , the compressor came on. Any ideas?
