View Full Version : Check Engine & Gas cap light

Hi everyone,
been a long time lurker here. Hopefully someone can help me. I've taken the Marauder in seven times to try and fix this problem and still the damn lights keep coming on. I've had the car completely smoked and the mechanic thought they found the problem. They dropped the tray replaced a part underneath the trunk area twice and still not good. I've replaced the gas cap twice too. I forget the code number but it was evap code. What would cause both lights to come on? Any idea?

Quick search of the internet found this:
P0442 - This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
* Other small leak in EVAP system
* Faulty vent o-ring seal
With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
* Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
* Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

P0447 - Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Open
A code P0447 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
- Damage harness or connectors to the Purge Control Valve
- The valve circuit is open or shorted
- EVAP canister vent control valve may be faulty
Possible solution
- Replaced vent control valve
Before replacing any parts, check for damage EVAP canister and for loose hoses from the vent control valve to the canister.
When is the code detected?
An improper voltage signal is sent to ECM through EVAP canister vent control valve.
P0447 Description
The EVAP canister vent control valve is located on the EVAP canister and is used to seal the canister vent. This solenoid (the EVAP canister vent control valve) responds to signals from the ECM.
When the ECM sends an ON signal, the coil in the solenoid valve is energized.
A plunger will then move to seal the canister vent. The ability to seal the vent is necessary for the on board diagnosis of other evaporative emission control system components.
This solenoid valve is used only for diagnosis, and usually remains opened.
When the vent is closed, under normal purge conditions, the evaporative emission control system is depressurized and allows EVAP Control System (Small Leak) diagnosis.

so what is the best course of action here. The already smoked the car and found one area they thought was the problem so they replaced the canister under the trunk twice. Gas cap also twice. Did a search and found a thread on the site that says this should be covered under the 8 year emission warranty? Is that accurate never heard of such a thing? I think they are running out of ideas. I've been going to this shop a long time and the mechanic is a friend. They have tried to do the right thing and have only charged me once. Is it time to go to the dealer?

Yes the emissions system is covered for 8 years by Federal Law. Take it to a Ford dealer.

according to this only the catalytic convertes, ECU and OBD are covered by the 8 years....everything else is 2 years?

Yes the emissions system is covered for 8 years by Federal Law. Take it to a Ford dealer.
EVAP system is not. Only catalytics are covered for 8/80 that for engine emissions. Fuel vapor emissions are totally different.

yep...it was 2 things. The gas cap was bad and it took 3 tries to find a good one. Also an emissions part was replaced. I'll look for the receipt this weekend and post it. I haven't had a problem since ;)

The dealership probably has better equipment to diag an EVAP leak. The purge valve can also stick and pull vacuum when it should not. The 447 could be the root of the whole problem. The control is not alowing the vent solenoid to close. Inspect the wiring very carefully. If you can get a scanner that controls it turn the vent solenoid off and on a couple of times using a test light between the two legs of the circuit. It should go off and on.
