an excellent read MAC......Thankyou. I just sent that article to my Brother who is a Police Officer because he is one of us who likes these cars too. A woman that I know in work who fell for the negative press about the Crown Vics is also gonna get a copy of this report from me.

Well, I guess the 5-star rating our car has is not a joke after all...
While it's always a tragedy when a LEO gets killed in the line of duty, it's NOT always Ford's fault...

sorry if I'm behind on this one, but I'm not aware of such a rating. So if you don't mind such a novice sounding question: where does this rating come from?

Would setting the fuel tank in front of the axle help in high speed crashes? I mean, wouldn't that just shove the axle into fuel tank and do the same exact thing? Either way, when you're involved in an extreme speed accident like that, you're screwed, the car is screwed, and who ever hit you is screwed.

Thanks Mac! My hometown police force switch to smaller Chevy's. I will e-mail the link to them, just so they are informed:)

My town temporarily fell for the hype, purchased one Intrepid to go with the Vics. Now we can always tell who's on the cheif's s-list!!

Like I have said before the panther platform is the safest car on the road today. The standard side inpact air bags ( Marauder) are a plus.:D

Don't forget the CAW who build this fine piece of machinery. We know what they're full of too. Remember the strike and the scab labour issue? Not a well respected piece of literature in this town.
Thanks Sarge, for reminding us all what a safe, well engineered, car we're driving. IMO the LEOs couldn't be driving on a better platform.

I would love to see statistics on 70mph crashes on other cars.
Good to hear from you yorks.

Very nice article and I like the tone......I think Ford has a winner in the Panther body....the sales show it and the safety rating does as well. Cops have a difficult job...period. There are plenty of things that can go wrong in their stressful day........without putting fear and doubt in the officers in their equipment.

You know, that's the whole point...it doesn't matter if it's a Chevy, a Volvo, or an AMG Mercedes for 90 large...if you slam ANYTHING into ANYTHING at 70+ MPH, you're in a world of hurt...
Maybe all of those lawyers trying to make a name for themselves by prosecuting Ford should look into promoting Driver Ed in school, or taking 7th-time DWI offenders off the road instead of defending them...

That's a very well written article, and i'm so glad that Ford's Environmental and Safety engineering person finally wrote back. I just don't understand this negative crap you keep hearing about from unedumacated folks on the safety of the Crown Vic platform. As it's been said many times already, the amount of energy being released in a 70+ mph collision is just incredible and what these idiots in the press arn't covering when they release these articles, are the speeds that were involved. As for lawyers promoting drivers ed, or taking DUI offenders off the road, that will never happen because that's not where the money is.

RF, I agree with you---Dallas is a perfect example-they convinced the Mayor to take on Ford and are making a bundle--they are retrofitting to LPG !!!!--the police are furious--no acceleration--no refueling facilities and---have you ever seen a LPG tank explode---could clear a city block !!! I'm so glad Ford is fighting back--this article goes to my dealer on Monday--he's been getting a lot of flack over this
