View Full Version : Is windshield vinyl moulding glued in or push-in?

I just had the windshield of my Marauder replaced with new OE Ford Carlite glass. Not thrilled with the shop I used and the lack of care taken with my car else I'd call them to ask this question... Is the wide vinyl strip that surrounds the windshield glued to the windshield itself when the glass is made, or is it glued in at the time of windshield installation, or does it have barbs that retains it between the body and glass and it just pushes in? I have seen all three of those types of windshield moulding on various makes and years of cars which is why I ask. I have a section about 3" wide on the roof where the new moulding does not quite seat flat. I'm going to give it some time in the sun to see if it irons itself out but if not I want to know if the trim can be removed and reinstalled or not.

It's supposed to be glued in at the time of installation.

Ok thanks guys, that just means I won't try to pull it out and re seat it, it is what it is. It seems to be flattening out as it sits. Just wasn't sure whether this was one of the types of molding that has barbs but no adhesive. Guess not
It's supposed to be glued in at the time of installation. If it is the same type that I installed on the Econoline, it just snaps on and is held in place by a little adhesive, until the urethane is applied and the windshield is pressed into place. When the urethane dries after it spreads over the edge of the molding, you won't be moving that molding without the risk of cracking your new windshield.

got it. It's lying down, the raised edge is almost gone, definitely not bad enough to bring back (shop scratched my hood and fenders not using fender covers.....). Time for some buffing. Thanks guys.

My windshield just got hit by a rock the other day. Glad I read this. Going to tell the installer that my car is my baby and he better take extra care......or else.....
Years ago on my '88 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z I had the windshield replaced and the ahole chipped the edge of the hood in many places. I was very unhappy.

Back in about 99 or so, I went on a tour of the Michigan Truck Plant where they were building Expeditions and Navigators. One of the most memorable things to me was the point where they installed the WS. It was all done by robots. A robot picked the glass up in the middle with suction cups, and spun it around. As it spun around, another part of the robot applied a perfect bead of the black urethane sealant to the edge, and then it stuck it in the ws frame. It did it much better and more consistently than any human could. And that black stuff they use is NASTY.

I was the operator that loaded the windshields into the robot at Lorain Assembly for 12 years running.
