 For about a week now my 2004 Marauder has what I believe is a valve tap on start up most mornings. Its a bit more noticeable when its colder out. It disappears after about 3 or 4 minutes of running. It only happens after the car sits out all night. I can start it in the morning with the problem and not start it until 12 hours later at night or any other time day or night and no problem at all. Otherwise the Rauder runs great. Just hit 153K. Any ideas on what this is ? Just changed oil and filter this past week by my mechanic and hasn't made the problem go away. I believe I am hearing a valve tap but is it possibly something else ?

Are you using a motorcraft filter? - Motorcraft is the only (or one of the few) that have an anti-drain valve - this keeps oil in the heads so they aren't dry when you turn the key.

This is a very important thing! Also Purolator filters regular or gold are safe to use since they are made by the same company that makes the Motorcraft oil filters.

Almost ALL filters have an ADBV...the difference in the Motorcraft filter is that the ADBV is made of silicone instead of nitrile. Silicone is better as it remains pliable when cold and resists the degrading effects of hot oil for much longer. WIX and NAPA Gold filters, as well as K&N and Mobil 1, also have a silicone ADBV. Most other filters are nitrile rubber. You can tell by the colour: silicone/orange vs. nitrile/black.
