The rear-view mirror socket has come off the "ball" attached to the front window. Can this be repaired or does the entire mirror need replaced?

I have not seen anyone try to reattach a mirror when it comes apart like that. I would invest in a new one.

You will need a new mirror assembly.

Has anyone taken one of these mirrors apart? The ones in both cars are loose, but not from the mount...it's something internal and the mirror vibrates all the time. Can they be "tightened" or is there some common wear part that can be replaced?

Are you sure that it is not from the windshield mount? I have been able to "tap" the mount part down a little more. To do this, I use a long screwdriver and a hammer.

For anyone who has a similar problem; I was able to reattach the mirror using Gorilla Super Glue. I taped the mirror to the inside of the front windshield, then appllied the glue to the ball and socket; pressed the two together and let it set for two hours. All better and "tightly" secured.

Frank,
I congratulate you on the first here to do this. Keep us posted on the progress.
