Well after several threads and several opinions my car is finally fixed. My car was making a whistling/ticking noise and no one new exactly what it was. I had about 6 different mechanics look at it and they all said something different. From possibly bad gas, to need a tune up, to just need a oil change, to need a new alternator, to need a need belt, to need a new idler pulley, to need a new water pump, to need a new header. I was referred to a hot rod mechanic who told me I needed new heads, So i bought 2 full heads from Royalpita and I call the mechanic and he said he would be out of town for 3 weeks and he would call me when he got back. Never heard back from him. I took the advice of the great Fastblackmerc who graced me with his presence and took my car to a mustang mechanic, the mechanic seem to know exactly what it was he said it was the timing chain tensioner and guides. After talking with him for an hour i finally just said what the hell even though his price was super high $1600 I said lets do it. I try to drop my car off a few days later and the guy is in Jail, i didnt feel comfortable with the other mustang guy and he made a mistake of calling my car a VIC. Big no no. I took my car back to my original mechanic who I lost my trust with because it seems like he is always just guessing what the problem is. I felt like I was out of options so I said what the hell and let him try to fix it. He had the car for a week and he called me today saying the car was ready and he only charged me $400 since I already had a timing chain tensioner kit that I also bought from Royalpita. I started the car up and no more stupid noise, i just sat there for a minute listening to the aero turbines harmonize. He also painted and installed my spoiler for no additional charge. He said he wanted to gain my trust back. I told him he definitely has and I would never stray again. Went from thoughts of just getting rid of my car back to a proud owner and MM member.
Daaaaaaaamn, glad you got it sorted out!

who are u telling, i remember when u said if i was close we would spot all ur parts out with mine to find the prob, boy would that have sucked. I wasted about $900 on unnecessary parts. If i can at least get rid of these heads i bought from Royalpita i will be fine.

Glad to hear your back on the road. How many miles on your car? I have a slight tick but only 17K and don't want to believe the tensioner is bad already.

Hell yeah and I meant it, I hated to see you struggling with finding the cause, we'd have switched parts out down to the crank until we figured it out. That's how i roll when it comes to people i like.

CBT thats good **** man, and thats one of the reasons I am a pround member of the site because of people like u. So many members on here are willing to help at the drop of a dime. I have nothing but respect for all the of members here. Special thanks to Fastblackmerc who even came by my house fresh off a flight to try to figure out what was wrong and if he wasnt in town for business, im sure we would of started taking things apart. But i swear its a big relief to be back MM rolling again.

So is the "Timing Chain Tensioner & Guides" a down the line problem with our cars? Whats the part # for the kit?

That comment right there is why this place is simply the best. CBT isn't kidding around either, he would/has, I have, as well as many others. It's all about helping, sharing knowledge, and building lifetime friendships.

17k miles, i doubt your problem is major, probably just need to drive it more.
Im at about 40k on a rebuilt motor, dash says 137k. Probably just need to drive yours more.

The mustang mechanic did say that it was a common problem with our motors after 100k miles. He said the guides usually wear out and need to be replaced every 100k. I dont know the part number for the kit, Contact Royalpita, Im sure he will be able to produce the part number for you.
So is the "Timing Chain Tensioner & Guides" a down the line problem with our cars? Whats the part # for the kit?

Well it sure was a problem on the 2000 - 2003 2V engines.
TSB
03-15-7 ENGINE - 4.6L - GRINDING TYPE NOISE FROM ENGINE TIMING CHAIN AREA
NOISE - GRINDING TYPE NOISE FROM ENGINE TIMING CHAIN AREA
Publication Date: July 23, 2003
FORD: 2000-2003 CROWN VICTORIA
MERCURY: 2000-2003 GRAND MARQUIS
ISSUE:
Some 4.6L 2V engines may exhibit a grinding type noise from the timing chain area. This may be caused by excessive wear of the timing chain tensioner arms. The tensioner arm has an aluminum base with a nylon surface. Another indication of this condition may be fine nylon and/or aluminum particles present in the engine oil.
ACTION:
Inspect the timing chain and arms to determine if excessive wear exists. If this condition is present, replace the timing chains, tensioners and the tensioner arms. Refer to the following Service Information for details.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Refer to Workshop Manual Section 303-01A for correct replacement service procedures.
Fine finish timing chains - part F5LY-6268-A
Tensioner - 2000 RH part F6AZ-6L266-DA, LH part F6AZ-6L266-CA
Tensioner - 2001-2003 RH part 1L3Z-6L266-AA, LH part XL1Z-6L266-AA
Tensioner arms - LH part 1L2Z-6L253-AA, RH part 1L2Z-6L253-BA
Remove residual nylon/aluminum particles by performing an engine oil change and replacing the oil filter. If wear has progressed through tensioner arm into tensioner piston, remove oil pan from engine and clean debris from oil pick up tube.
PART NUMBER PART NAME
F5LY-6268-A Fine Finish Timing Chain
F6AZ-6L266-DA Tensioner - 2000 RH
F6AZ-6L266-CA Tensioner - 2000 LH
1L3Z-6L266-AA Tensioner - 2001-2003 RH
XL1Z-6L266-AA Tensioner - 2001-2003 LH
1L2Z-6L253-AA Tensioner Arm - LH
1L2Z-6L253-BA Tensioner Arm - RH
The problem usually is detected by a "Sewing Machine" noise and what you are hearing is the timing chain grinding through the tensioner arm, often into the tensioner piston.

With regular oil changes and no hours of idling the problem is far less severe. My 2001 was fine at 182K, note the angle of the chain and tensioner arm

Another car at 90K miles the arm is nearly GONE (This engine was bound to be chewed up by then)

Old arm vs New arm on my 2001, if I had not already purchased the arms and tensioners I would have just put the cover back on

Since the 4V guides are nearly the same design, and used the same inferior nylon this can happen on the 4V engines, though no TSB ever came out that i know of

My 2000 CV has a "howling "sound short of a grind just about eveytime on start up from a cold engine only---Could this be the same thing?

Glad to here it's back on the prowl, I had mine done on my daily driver 04 CVPI (timing chain slap due to wear on the guides and tensioners) and it wasn't cheap either!

So we are able to replace the guides and chains without ripping out the engine?
Day project?!
