View Full Version : Heat exchanger choices

I'm searching the world far and wide for Eaton swap parts as many have done before. One one the last things I still need to get is the heat exchanger. Im iffy about going with a stock cobra one due cooling capacity. (I'm afraid that Ford went as small as they could to save on cost, wouldnt be the first time they've done it). Fluidyne looks good but is pricey. I know this is an off the wall idea but would a radiator from lets say a honda civic, geo metro, or some other small car work? I know I'd have to figure out fittment and mounting issues but hey, thats the fun of it all! What kind of temperatures and pressures does the intercooling system see?

What SC said. Its the biggest that will fit up front and does an awesome job. The stock cobra unit sucks

May be the single best purchase I made for my Eaton swap.

Care to guess who gave me the tip?

I'll give you a hint; ZM...

Find a shop that does ceramic coating, tell them you want thermal dispersant coating on it.

Tighter fit = smaller and simpler brackets = easier and faster to make = up and running sooner. I love how things seem to work out perfectly.

That's what she said.

I was wondering when someone was gonna say that.

The intercooler/heat exchanger is separate from the engine cooling system. A separate tank, pump, and hoses are used to hold and circulate the blower coolant, and it's a retro-fit anyway, so the car doesn't care.

Just to add to this, by using two different colored coolants you can tell which system (S/C - green, engine cooling - gold) is leaking if such a thing occurs. BTW, I'll be switching over to that frozenboost exchanger this spring too, once all the snow melts.

Just picked up a brand new stock 03/04 cobra one... Now contemplating doing a frozenboost type 100 or 118. Was on the phone with Lidio at Alternative earlier about a few things pertaining to my Eaton swap and setting up a date to get it tuned. Asked him about the frozenboost ones, but was unfamiliar with them, but said the stock 03/04 is fine up to 500 or so.

Has anyone datalogged the frozenboost one to compare intake temps?

ImpalaSlayer

The stock works yes but you will want the big one. The coolant gets no hotter then ambient with the big one, with the small one it gets a bit warm. Coating either with thermal stuff would be a waste imo as neither get hot enough to take advantage of it and the type 100 comes painted with silver paint anyway. Another cool feature of the 100 is it has its own fill and drain, its basically a small radiator

Some of us like it black instead of having the silver bling behind the grille. Black paint WILL reduce efficiency, thermal dispersant coating will not.

The silver finish is obvious when looking straight at the HE head-on; other than that, it isn't reall noticeable.

I really don't know, I haven't seen the specifications for the paint they use.
