So recently I noticed that my transmission will upshift down shift from 4 to 3 as soon as I slow down to 35 and won't upshift until I hit 40. Today on my way home via the highway the transmission decides it's going to down shift from 4 to 3 as soon as I hit 70. I slow to 69 or 68 and then it upshifts again. I repeat this again and the same thing happens. Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on with that? O/D light didn't come on let alone flash. I've also noticed that the shift schedule seems to have changed a little to hold on to gears a little longer while I haven't changed driving habits.

O/D light didn't come on let alone flash. You shouldn't be completely screwed yet, then.

This is going to sound stupid, but how old is your battery (OE one will be Motorcraft, no handle on the top)? When the battery started going south on my Grand Marquis, the transmission did all sorts of screwy crap. Afterwards, dash lights started coming on and off at all times. But for a day or so, the car drove like absolute crap...and there was no indication that the battery was on its way out. It started normal and everything...

Pan drop and change the filter, clean magnet and top it off (about 5 quarts) -- then see how it is.

These transmissions love clean fluid.

^^ +1 on the battery if its original

It's a downshift, sorry for the confusion. The only reason why I mentioned the shift at 35 is it didn't do that for the first 8 or so months I owned the car. The battery is brand new and I did have a fluid/filter change about a thousand miles ago.

Fluid low? Possible shift linkage is too tight and close to being out of gear?

Time to get a pan with a drain plug!

Don't mean to scare you but when I hade the tranny fluid and filter changed on a 95 ltd 200 miles later the trans went. I also read somewhere that it's not good to do a trans fluid change if it has not been done regularly. Another thing I'm thinking is even if the trans does not slip when you floor it then I don't think it's the trans itself

This is a long shot, but when my '01 BMW 530i SPORT did this, it was my Mass Air Meter going bad. It's cheap to maybe try cleaning yours. Couldn't hurt as long as you do it right

I know when my trans was shifting funny with tune (didnt do it with out the tune) it ended up being my EGR....replaced it and no problems since....

I am reminded by your post by this one:

Might want to check it out before doing ANY work to the transmission. Good luck!

Well, I've driven the car at speed since this and nothing's happened. I also checked the positioning of the harness and it's all good. Maybe this is some sort of one-time anomaly...
