View Full Version : Do You Consider Your Marauder A Muscle Car?

Just got the registration form for the NHMS Classic Vehicle Show which is one of the events for our upcoming New Hampshire Meet. There are 26 classes with trophies awarded for 1st-3rd place in each class. Our group will enter as a car club. Which class would you say is most appropriate for us?

Class # 9 (American Cars 1970-present)

Class # 14 (Muscle Cars)

Mustangs, Chevys (55-57) and Corvettes all have their own classes. BTW we would have been given a class of our own if we brought 20 Marauders.

You may be able to register under multiple classes and pick both #9 and #14. I did that at the huge UPS show (1500 cars) in Laurel, MD back in October 2007. I ended up taking a 2nd place in the 2000-2007 Class. Joe Walsh (427 Cobra) and Mike Poore (Sunshire '93 Mustang Feature Car) also took home trophies in their classes.

If you are limited to ONLY one class, I think I would pick #9 Muscle Cars to narrow the field just a bit. 1970 to Present is a huge class grouping. The Marauder was marketed as the "new American muscle" so you will fit.

I'm actually hoping that maybe in a year or two we can get 20 Marauders to show up and have a Marauder Class. So between Carlisle and NHMS there would be lots more trophies for us!!

Sorry to say the Marauder isn't s muscle car. Muscle cars have two doors. The Marauder is on its own which makes it cooler. Someone said power couch a few years back... it sticks.

Muscle cars are high performance cars made from 1964 to 1974. The car manufacturers put large displacement V8 engines in mid-sized production models at a price that the average American could afford and gave them new model names. The huge V8 engines used in muscle cars were modified to produce large amounts of horsepower and torque.
http://www.musclecarsociety.com/muscle-car-definition

Muscle car is a term used to refer to a variety of high performance automobiles (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Automobile).[1] (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/#cite_note-0) The Merriam-Webster definition is more limiting, "any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving."[2] (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/#cite_note-1) The term generally refers to 2-door rear wheel drive (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Rear_wheel_drive) mid-size cars (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Mid-size_car), and sometimes full-size cars (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Full-size_car) equipped with large, powerful, V8s (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/V8_engine), and sold at an affordable price for street use and both formal and informal drag racing (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/wiki/Drag_racing).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_car

If you go with a strict definitition based on the above, you'd want to go with:
Class # 9 (American Cars 1970-present)

IMO, you've got a better chance in that class as a clean MM is gonna beat the pants off (in terms of both looks and performance) anything else entered in that category.

I'd have to opt for the muscle car class simply based on the performance of the original cars. Doesn't hurt that its the classiest and comfiest either. Makes it and the SS Impalas the only ones to fit that description. By the way, I have to admire that avatar

My understanding was that muscle cars had high powered engines and a full frame (i.e. Marauders, Chevelles, Chargers, GTOs).

Pony cars had high powered engines, but were uni-body cars (i.e. Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers).

They "Pony" car nomenclature came because the Mustang was the first.

To me a true muscle car is a performance model mid-size coupe. Not a pony car (Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Challenger), not a four door. Id say the 04-06 GTO was a muscle car but not the G8 GT or GXP. Our cars are performance sedans; a gentleman's express.

Wrong. There is no such thing as a four door muscle car. Muscle cars weren't designed as family cars, performance was the purpose. Thats why so many had big engines and options included A/C and even carpet! The first muscle car of all time was a G.T.O. and was in no way a sedan.

There hasn't been a factory muscle car sense 1974 as far as I am concerned.

Muscle cars must have two doors and at least four seats. After reading a post 90% of the time I eventually agree, but a four door muscle car??? No such thing.

Oh boy...a "define 'musclecar'" thread. This should be good for 300+ hits. That's because there's no 1, universally accepted definition. It boils down to opinion and A LOT of gray area.
A "musclecar" is what YOU think it is and good luck trying to convince the guy/gal next to you of anything different.

You are still wet behind the ears!

Muscle started when kids took mom & dad's hand me down family sedan and worked on the engine and trans

GTO came out in '64 before that big fords & chevy ruled! Mercury's own marauder was launched in '63...I was there Dom I know how it started.

Woodward Ave in Detroit was the birth place of crusin. Early '50's.

Through the years the term "Muscle Car" has been stamped on almost every car that has some power.

Old Fart's like me know what a true muscle car is!

IMHO, the 2 dr requirement for a Musclecar isn't legit anymore, as there are so few 2 drs available.

Back in the mid 60's, 2 drs were available from just about every mfg/brand. (Mercury even had a 2 dr hardtop wagon (no "B" post) back in the 50's.

Today, except for a few foreign models, 2 drs are mostly pocket rockets or low cost commuter cars, unless you run a hedge fund and have money to burn.

Is the MM a musclecar?

After mods, yes.

Out of the factory, it's a high performance sedan.
