I recently installed new pedals..when backing up,I hit a mail box...hitting brake and gas pedals together....It left a streak of white paint on right rear panel...I wet sanded the paint off but,the gloss is gone,,,tried blackbox cleaner and wax, black box detailer and zaino glaze...no help...any suggestions besides repainting..also tried buffing it out..:help:

You shouldn't have sanded first. Many paint transfer issues can be corrected by a light to heavy polish, although not always. Go to your FLAPS that sells Meguiars products and get a tube of Scratch X and apply that with a soft cloth. I'm not up on other Meguiars products as I don't use them, but they are adequate and are available OTC. I'm sure that others will chime in with help on your problem.

What grit paper did you use?

80 Grit!!! ;) Excellent question! That determines which grit/polish to use next...

sounds like you sanded thru your clear coat

I would have tried a cleaner polish, then a light compound, then a heavy compound. If that didn't work a trip to a body shop would be in order.

If you just picked up paint--no gouging--I use an acrylic paint softener (Goop Off even works)--used to clean windows, etc---first--soak the paint for a few minutes--rub with terry cloth- This will remove the paint without even affecting the painted surface. If there are shallow scratches , use scratch remover. If you must use sandpaper, avoid anything less than 600 Wet or Dry ( I personally use 1200 grit)---use wet and lightly. 3M makes a good clear coat rubbing compound--but 80 grit will cut thru to bare metal in a few strokes. You can use mineral spirits, lacquer thinner or MEK (if used in quick-non-soaking strokes). I've used these procedures to keep my kids cars looking great since clear coat came out. The most important thing--keep metal temp in the 70s if using any solvent--especially MEK. Oh yes, I've been painting cars and airplanes since 1944--seen all the different paints come and go---any how, this works for me.

As always, test in the least visible place , first---good luck, Maury

Assuming you used nothing under 1200 grit AND assuming you didn't cut through the clear (although you might think you did) I would wet sand, with a block using 2000-2500 grit, buff with wool pad using 3M rubbing compound, followed by 3M perfect it swirl remover and perforated pad (both blue in color). Start your speed at about half and keep checking work, move up if needed. I have repaired many auto's with this technique and am still amazed at the better than new outcome.

There is NO room for repairing paint on the cheap, spend the bucks on good, proven products or wish you did later.

I agree---I keep 1200-2500 on the shelf--just giving my bottom limits--and I have a soft touch :D Maury

That's why. The 1000 will leave micro scratches that you need to smooth out with 2000+ (Gently), then swirl remover/polish... (No, I'm not a pro, but, I've done this before) Next time, try the finest grade possible before going down instead of starting down and working up. I've removed car paint from other cars off my clear coat by just using 3M swirl remover.
