I have always put in six and a half quarts. The reason I ask is because my GF went to Pepboys to buy oil for her Mercury Mountainer. They sold her five quarts of oil. Her truck also has a 4.6, but is not a Marauder engine. So I put in the five assuming it would still need the extra 1.5 that my car takes. After adding the 5 no oil was on the dip stick at all and this was after running the truck for 2 minutes. So Went back to the store, got the 2 quarts, added 1.5 and it was right where it should be.
So there are two experiences.

Six even. I just buy the 5qts and a single and pop that in. Dipstick is always up to the top.

Dom, you have a S/C right? Is your S/C fed oil from your oil pan? If yes that is why you add 6.5 quarts to your car after an oil & filter change.

I believe he said this is for his girlfriend's Mountaineer.

He isn't talking about his Marauder, he is talking about his g/f's Mountaineer. Check the owners manual, fill to that level and recheck. If it needs more add 1/4 to 1/2 quarts at a time, let sit for 5-10 mins then recheck. Have to allow time for the oil to get down the pan and be able to be read.

I think he is talking about the 4.6 in general seeing as how is GF's takes as much oil as ours do in there stock form. Thats how I read it.

There was a thread about this a while back. Some Marauder dipsticks seem to vary in length a bit, so 6 quarts does not fill it up. One oil change, I had to put in seven quarts. Last time, I put in 6.5.

I may start putting in 6.5. I burn oil and would like to not have to worry about it as much. Just put the 6.5 in and have a little peace of mind.

This. V10s also need 6.5.
My gf's 06 cadillac CTS with 41k miles started eating oil (well, she found out while driving home from visiting her parents in louisiana, when the car ran out of oil...) We traded that in; but before we did that, found a tsb from GM that said it is normal for cars they made prior to 09 to eat up to 1qt every 2k miles... It may just be me, but that sounded maybe like cars made before 1949, not 2009... My 200k+ mile jeep doesn't eat that much oil between changes... Granted hers, after the ordeal with running out of oil, I calculated by checking/adding oil, ate about 1qt every 1k miles... I'm glad that thing is gone, though I am worried her carbon footprint might have shrunk when going to a 4.0L 4x4 wrangler... 60k miles, engine design found in the old testament, and it doesn't eat any oil between changes.

The question was for both cars,
Gordon, my blower has its own oil, but you were the only one to have put the blower to the reasoning behind the amount. Smart thinker you are.

1992 Crown Vic takes 5.0 quarts
2004 Marauder takes 6.0 quarts
Both with filter change and filled to the top.

Yes I was gonna say that with my Vortech I put 6.3 qts exact to acount for the oiling system for the S/C (per Vortech Tech) but as you stated Dom the Procharger's are a self contained oiling system. When my KB was done the guys there didnt even know this about the Vortech, I was the one who informed the guys at KB about this. Some guys I know with Vortechs on other cars dont beleive this? There again the havent had a blower failure
I have a 2003 4.6l Mountaineer too, it does take 6 qts per the manual and that doesn't make it reach the full line. Since the Mountaineer is considered a truck Ford apparently decided to go with 6 qts like most of their trucks.
Personally I just put in the stated amount that does put it well with in the safe range.
