View Full Version : Need help asap! Did I fry my window motor?

I was having the problem of the drivers window sometimes working and sometimes not. I looked up the sticky and followed the instructions. I clicked the buttons back in to test before a full reassembly. Soon as I turned the cars power on I saw a small spark. I unplugged and connected it again. All the green lights come on, all windows work EXCEPT the drivers. The interior lights still dim when I flip the switch, but the window will not move.

So it appears the switch is getting power, but isn't moving the window at all. A buddy of mine said I might have fried the circuits, but the window motor is probably fine. On the up side the window is closed.

I have a long haul this weekend with tolls.

Any idea what happened here? Can I get a switch out of a junkyard or are used electronics a bad idea?

Thanks!

Slam the door a few times. The window motor may be stuck.

No dice......... :(

Did you slam it like a man or just close it? Also hold the button when you slam it.

I slammed it, but the button itself now feels worn out compared to the others. Doesn't click as easily, but it still clicks.

Pay for tolls using the rear window or drive through in reverse. :D

lol if I was alone maybe.

So, does it sound like I broke the switch or could this be more serious... window motor?

You have to slam the door with the key on engine not running, be sure to leave the pssenger side window so you do not get locked out by some strange change.

Get a toll pass.

Ok. I will give that a try tomorrow. Found out the part is $63 if I have to replace the switch. Not bad, I was thinking it would $130 or something.

If the lights dim when you try to raise or lower the window, the motor is getting power, so the switch is OK.

The window motor is stuck.

Get a rubber mallet.

While holding the window switch in the desired position, smack the inside door panel. This should free up the motor.

Take the moter out.

Take the motor apart.

Clean and lube the motor.

Put the motor back together.

Reinstall the motor.

It will then work for a long time.....

+1

Replace and/or clean the master window switch. Grease or replace window regulator.

How do I take the motor out if it must come to that? The main concern is how to get the interior panel off. How is that done.... correctly?

I would love to use a hammer to fix it, but this seems to be a short term fix. seems like a starter, hit it and it will work, but it's going to go out for good sooner or later. I always blast my Doo Wop music with the windows down during summer nights, so I need that window working.

Maybe I can chance it with a junkyard part, but who knows.

Does anyone know if I can be really cheap and take one off one of my second row doors and put that in the drivers or is that a different size?

Dom-wait for JUST BOB to get back from Louisville and let him help you with it. I would buy a new motor and not mess around with a junkyard part -especially a part that is going to get used alot. Once you see how the door panel comes off (it is pretty easy if you know how) you will know for any future repairs. Just my suggestion.

The motor is cheap enough that I wouldn't replace it with a junk yard part. You should be able to get a re manufactured motor form a FLAPS.

It's about a $40 difference. If it was a $400 I would look for used, but $40 more and a new one with a warranty, why not.

So to disconnect the interior panel it's all down below? I don't unbolt something and snap the rest off with a crow bar? Seriously. :o

On our cars do you have to drill out rivets to get the motor out?
I had to do that in my 93 Tbird. Then trying to get bolts and nuts back in because I didnt have a rivet gun. What a pain!!!!

I am curious to hear how the process goes for you Dom.
