if i understand correctly running lean causes pinging and can damage the engine. what happens if you run it too rich?

Burn the catalytics out. I did that a couple of times on my SHO.

You throw unburnt fuel out the pipes... Get a nice backfire and you can actually blow mufflers apart! My brother-in-law did that on a 1970 Impala... I happened to be in it, we thought a grenade went off! :D

It can wash down the cylinders, leaving them un-lubricated, leading to scored cylinder walls and low compression.

Yup, you wanna go for the Goldilocks A/F Mix:
Not too rich, not too lean; get it set just right! ;)

Anyone have p0171 and p0174 codes thrown? Both banks are running lean. And my concern is burning my valves. My mm has 105000miles and she's getting tired. I checked for vacuum leaks and seafoumed the gas tank. Any suggestings would be very helpful. Thx

With that many miles I'd replace the O2 sensors. Use good quality ones.

have you ever changed the O2 sensors?
Clean the MAF, more often than not the o2 sensors are reporting the correct condition and not the problem...

Yep!! Cleaning the MAF can work wonders.
Also check the fuel pressure and replace fuel filter.
