ALL MARAUDERERS,AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS RECOVERING FROM THE LOST OF MY FELLOW PARTNER " MERC-75 INTERCEPTOR " AND THEN BEGINNING WITH AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH FOR A SUCCESOR NOW I AM PLEASED TO PRESENT TO ALL YOU MANGS THE NEW ADOPTED PANTHER WHICH WILL BE MY NEW PARTNER AND PART OF MY FAMILY , HERE IT IS, PEOPLE OF MM.NET I PRESENT TO ALL YOU...

:banana2: :bows: BLUE PANTHER 74 INTERCEPTOR :burnout: :banana2:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_1728.JPG (http://javascript<b></b>:;)

This Panther is a Ford Crownvictoria LX 2000 HPP was adopted officially in March 21 2011 at 4:00pm in a dealer in the city of Isabela, Puerto Rico, the price for this sleeping beast was $4.400.00 plus registration which increase to $4.600.00 the initial price was $5.995.00 but due to some malfunctions and some bidding I made to buy it at the price i mention first, I drive this Panther from where it was forgiven to my home where beggin to inspect it rigurosly, the milleage of this Panther was 144865 milles runned, it has double exhaust,3.55 gears stiffer rear swaybar OEM, LX 16 wheels it only, it only came with one key and one 4 function remote, interiors are cloth blue only driver seat is electric adjustable with lumbar passenger seat do not, color is Wedgewood blue, the Panther was have "check engine" & air bag lights on so I take it to one of my thrusty mechanics and start to made some tune ups so the first phase of tune ups was the following.

1- Replace 4 oxygen sensors.
2-Repair the alternator.
3-clean the inyectors.
4-Replace fuel filter.
5-install new battery.
6-install new battery clamps
7-Replace PCV valve

Now i will present the first batch of pics taken to BP74 Interceptor enjoy them.

Yeah, having the wrong bulbs can be a problem...

I have the SilverStar Ultras in Phoebe and frankly I'm underwhelmed. I think the regular SilverStar bulbs are superior, and they cost less. When one goes, I'm switching back to the non-Ultra version.

I do like the SilverStar 3157s, too. They look cool blue until illuminated, then turn amber. Gets rid of that "fried egg" look in the corners. Unfortunately, Wally World and AutoZone discontinued them. According to Sylvania's HQ in New Hampster, they only sell them through Pep Boys now, and the nearest one is over an hour from me.

stryker
04-27-2011, 03:26 PM
Well mangs, these are the findings resulting from my inspection, unfortunally I discover that the rear air suspension instead of airsprings I horrorised found it rusted steel coil springs it looks that the previous owner remove them to repalce it for steel coil springs, the code of the springs is unknown due that don't have label but not all is lost, the panther still have the air compressor and i made a call to ARNOTT INDUSTRIES and order the catalog in the meantime I have stored the rear coil springs that belongs to "MERC-75 INTERCEPTOR" which are in very good condition, well here are the pics.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/rustrrcoil1.JPG

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/rustrrcoil2.JPG
If you noe the coils springs do not have tha isolators so i will have to buy them before to install the otherones while i get the airsprings.

Now here are the pictures taken to the transmission of BP74i, it seems to have some leakage somewhere which i discover when i did some pressure washing on all under Panther, untill now it's working perfectly with no fails, slipping or shudder.

Now this few pics are from driveshaft to differential.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/diff1.JPG
The 8.8 diff as you see has plenty of dirt and rust as the swaybar too which it is 21mm, the cover is aluminum but it looks it has been painted, but I will solve that too.

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/diff2.JPG
Confirmed, the gears are 3.55 as you can see the digit in the circle is a 3 but is difficult to see due that is very near the nut of the cover.

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/driveshaft.JPG
! Blah ! steel driveshaft buy it has remedy too, a MMC one and solved. :burnout:

X vs. H Stryker is mainly a sound thing......... X pipes have a lil more of a high pitch, where the H has a lil deeper rumble......

In high HP vehicles, the X may flow more efficiently too, but if you are not building the motor up or adding an SC, it really is what you like soundwise. Nothing more.

As far as what to go with for your exhaust set up, that is such a subjective thing. The only thing I will offer, is that Magnaflow mufflers come in a stainless steel finish, and may resist corrosion from salt better than Flowmasters ect.

Greeting Marauderers again now I post a few pics of the front traction.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/KYBshock.JPG
Yeap Mangs aftermarket Shocks I note too softly the suspension so this are my findings, the front shocks was replaced for this crap KYB ones.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/KYBshock2.JPG
This pic shows the model of the shock KYB GR-2 but a police interceptor shocks for front and rear are ready to be installed and get the front NN/NUL police springs to stiff better the ride I hate those floaty & fluffy suspension.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/frntlink.JPG
now I show one of the front link this one is severely deteriorated if you can note the rubber boot is mostly worn but a pair of MOOG ones wait to be installed.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/pittman.JPG
here's the pittman arm with excess of old grease and plus note the front swaybar bushing worn and old and the swaybar rusted.

The whole front suspension needs and complete restore but this are the parts in process to recieve to upgrade.

1-MOOG front links (2)
2-MOOG Pittman arm
3-Police NN/NUL front springs and isolators
4-Police front shocks and boots
5-Energy suspension front swaybar bushings

Well mangs this pics are from the rear suspension.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/rearlink.JPG
Here you can see all rusted the link is very old and the bushings are very worn and if you see the swaybar is rusted too.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/rrsbb.JPG
Here's the rear swaybar rusted and the bushing worn for the time and even the differential is rusted too, i think that this Panther was exposed to salt at some time.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/rrshock1.JPG
left rear shock as you note is leaking the fluid so same are the right shock.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/rrshock2.JPG
Right shock leaking and everything else rusted.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/rasadj.JPG
If i'm not mistaken this is the air suspension adjuster to raise or lower more the rear of the Panther.

Measures to solve this was taken too and here's the list.

1-Energy suspension rear links aand swaybar bushings.
2-Air springs and compressor from Arnott.
3-Police rear shocks & boots.

Great pictures MANG

You have plenty of work ahead of you with that new Panther, sadly the underneath of the car shows the age more than the exterior/interior.

I have only seen one other cloth interior P-74 and it was a 98. Does your car have the EATC or the manual air conditioning?? Does it have dual power seats both with door controls? Those are also typical P-74 items.

I would suspect that trans pan is leaky do a full drain and refill with Mercon V check for the gasket. I bet someone used the crap cork one and threw out the great stock rubber/steel one.

Make sure you get those front springs quickly, the 92-02 springs are discontinued and you have to find em in stock somewhere to get em.

I share your horror of finding coil springs where the air springs should be. Both my Lincolns were in similar shape. And to make it worse, no insulators and both had horrible springs installed. The 94 had massive springs which hardly allowed the suspension to move, while the 96 had soft saggy springs which would rub the tires with a 110 lb grandma in the back seat.

I have a nearly new set of Arnott air springs, just got a pair of beat but working spares from the junkyard for $30 along with good solenoids and O rings. One still had pressure!!

Funny thing was the car had NO AXLE and was sitting on the ground, but nobody took the air springs. I was able to harvest them, if the axle was still there it would have been nearly impossible to remove them.

I appreciate your observations and Yesss I really have a lot of work with my panther and believe me i am very motivated in bring back this Panther closer to new in performance and to hold heavy use due that this will be my DD Panther and I cannot take risks so that's why Iam doing what I call "AGGRESSIVE MODS" changing what I note suspicious to collapse and changing all fluids possible to bring it to like new in function, Well CHEVYGUY mang in order to your questions I will provide the answers.

NO. unfortunally My Panther only have adjustable the driver seat with lumbar.

The climate control is manual and not digital (buttons & electronic)

About the tranny, I buy a large capacity pan and the filter plus I have 6 Qts of trans oil but I will not do a power flush and a complete oil change to avoid the risk to start slipping and shuddering I also have the good Gasket rubber/steel one from the 2003 MGM.

Thanks for the news about the springs tomorrow I will visit my people at the Ford parts House to place the order not only for the front NN/NUL but the rear HH/HAP too to have it reserved in case I decided to leave the rear suspension on coil springs.

I have the catalog from Arnott industries and will place the order for the complete air suspension (compressor, air springs plus spare solenoids and extras) In my case I prefeer to buy'em new than used due to wear for the use.

Today I take BP74i to my mangs in Pep Boys to do flushing and replace the fluids of power steering, radiator & brakes, only fluids waiting to replace are differential and transmission (partial).

You DO know the torque converter has a drain??, you can remove 11-12 quarts of transmission fluid if you drain the converter and drop the pan.

This plug was deleted late in the 2001 model year. Rotate the engine CLOCKWISE to find the plug, never rotate counter-clockwise this could jump a tooth on the timing chains (Did not know this before 1!!)

i will do a power wash to the complete engine and later sprayed with WD-40 to prevent it to sick the dirt and dust.Osvaldo, be careful about power-washing the motor. Due to the design of the heads and intake manifold on the 2V, the spark plugs sit in deep wells that are open to water intrusion, especially if there is a lot of pressure behind it. You may get a misfire immediately afterwards and it's a real pain to remove all the COPs and dry all the water out of the wells. Plus, if the COP boots are cracked or dried out, that's even worse. You might want to consider getting replacements (just the boots) as they're inexpensive and can save headaches later.

You can drain the torque converter and drop the pan of the trans. Just disconnect the battery cable for 10 min before starting it up. This will reset the PCM settings to the default and increase the pressure in the trans so it won't slip with the new fluid.

 Well mangs a problem has ocurred with BP74i, while I was driving it suddenly i start to hear some loud and annoiyng noise that came from the front suspension I stopped and push down the Panther and feel and hear the squeaking noise but I cannot identifiyng where comes precisely but am affraid that the front links can't hold anymore and are about to collapse, other thing is that the front shocks are not the OEM and are a crap, garbage, :censor: so I think it's time to start the 1st phase of aggressive mods with the parts i have while I get the rest, by now I have determined to replace the rear corroed springs with the ones that have MERC-75 INTERCEPTOR which I stored after replace them for a police rear HAP ones, they are in very good state so this monday i will deliver BP74i to my mechanic to begin what I called...

1st Phase of "AGGRESSIVE " mods

1- MOOG front links
2-MOOG idler arm
3-Motorcraft Police Interceptor front Shocks and protective shock boots
4-MOOG upper and lower control arm bushings
5-Motorcraft AGSF22FM sparkplugs 22c
6- Stant 180c thermostat and Motorcraft gasket
7-Mercury Rear Coil springs
8-Ford coil spring isolators
9-Energy suspension rear swaybar links
10-Motorcraft Police Interceptor rear shocks and protective shock boots

I will use the mercury coil springs while I decided if I use Police HAP springs or the Arnott Airsprings. I will keep noticed about the repairs and if possible pics but once repaired will take more pics to show the progress in mods to BP74i . :burnout:

The tranny cooler install was suspended and the cooler I returned to the store, in the observation I did to BP74i I found this.
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/gallery/data/500/2radiators.JPG
I follow the the transmission lines untill here which I think is a second radiator for the tranny oil, but my question now is if I can add a cooler in conjunction with the OEM, I have other doubts,
1- which is the top temperature for the tranny oil to function.
2-Can I adapt a temp indicator like the "auto meter " ones and where I connect it.

any aportation will be granted mangs. :D :cool4:
The cooler the tranny fluid is the better. Heat is the enemy of a transmission.

Add the after market cooler in series with the factory cooler.

Hook it up like this:

The output line from the factory cooler to the input of the aftermarket cooler.
Output from the aftermarket cooler to the return factory return line.

You can mount the sending unit in the tranny pan, a service port on the transmission or use the adapter block to mount the sender in the return line. If you use the adapter block just remember to ground the block.

1- which is the top temperature for the tranny oil to function. 2-Can I adapt a temp indicator like the "auto meter " ones and where I connect it.Jerry Wroblewski, the "father of the 4R70W" has said that every 20° over 180°F cuts the life of the fluid in half. This, of course, applies to continuous temp, not intermittent, so if the temp occasionally spikes over 180° in heavy traffic, it's not a concern unless it gets REALLY high. You might want to install the gauge first and see what your temps are without the auxiliary cooler...you may not need it, especially since you have the larger finned aluminium pan.

There are a number of mounting methods you can use...under dash, A-pillar pod, steering column pod...pick the one you think looks best.

Thanks for posting that. I kept forgetting to post up about that cause I wanted to know about it. I believe mine so far has only reach about 170° and that's with some heavy footing in about 85-95° humid weather so far. Still some hot days to come.

This what was recommend to me by several members and works great. The fan is a little over kill for a stock power range car. But it is you car mang and between the two you posted you want a stacked cooler like the second one (b&m).

between the two you posted you want a stacked cooler like the second one (b&m).From DANA Corp's web site: "While the plate-and-fin coolers offer high heat transfer performance and low air-side pressure drop, the stack-plate coolers feature very high durability. These coolers are installed on vehicle fronts for auxiliary cooling of passenger cars and light trucks."

So I guess if you can install it in a place that is protected from road debris and major vibration, the finned-type is better, but I doubt it matters all THAT much in a street-driven car that isn't heavily modified. Either one is an improvement over stock.

the mechanic forget to install the magnet that goes inside the OEM pan, what are the issues that can occur if the magnet is not inside the pan ?The magnet is there primarily to collect wear particles from the metal portions of the transmission. Since most wear occurs in the first 10-15,000 miles from new, your transmission is probably not generating that many wear particles now, so it should not be a major issue. Your new pan has a drain plug, so just do a drain & fill every few oil changes or once a year...whatever fits your schedule.

You could epoxy a strip of ferrous metal to the inside of the pan and put the magnet back, too.

the Panther BP74i is ready to intimidate on the streets and roads and displace menacing, :woohoo:

Congrats Osvaldo...you've done a LOT of work to that car, now go out and ENJOY it! :burn:
