View Full Version : GMS Connectors and Plug Gap?

I'm getting ready to install some GMS COP connectors and new Motorcraft SP-505 plugs.

I was planning on setting the plug gap to 0.052 but the instructions say you can increase gap in N/A applications .003-.007.

Just wondering if this would be beneficial to do or not. I also just installed new OEM COPs about a week ago.

It won't provide an benefit.

I always set my gap on the lower end of the spec. As the electrodes wear the plug will still be within the spec.

Use a torque wrench, anti-sieze, cold engine and dielectric grease.

Your gonna like the GMS connectors.

^^^what Jim said^^^

Widening the plug gap *may* give a slightly smoother idle, leading the uninformed to believe that something magical just happened, but it also increases the risk of spark blow-out at high RPM.

Kinda what I thought but figured I'd double check. Thanks.

to help start the new plugs, i used one of the oem boots since the gms connectors come with new boots. just put the plug in the old boot just enough to hold it and screw the plug into the head holding the other end of the used boot. this guarantees you dont cross it which would suck ass. could also use fuel line

Keep it stock, opening it wider just makes spark blow out easier as Bob said plus over time they widen a tad anywho.

In THEORY a wider plug gap or unshrouded electrode will make a better flame front.

To wit, splitfire and other multi electrode plugs or the cut back electrode on the rapid fires

Reality and testing has not proven much of those gains

Make sure when installing the GMS connectors, that they are fully seated onto the plugs.

You will be surprised when installing these on how hard you have to push down on the COP's before you hear the connectors snap onto the plugs.

Didn't quite snap like I have heard but definitely felt them "pop" into place. Double checked them all because I was waiting/expecting to hear the snap but they were all nice an tight. Left the GMS connectors behind on the 2 COPs I pulled out when I was doing my sanity check making sure they were seated.

All in all I'm fairly impressed with them, smoother idle and throughout the RPM range for sure but the SOTP Dynometer doesn't register anything gain wise.

Datalogging shows no more misfires and that is all I was looking for so they did their job. Not bad for $96 :beatnik:

How'd you like the big ball point pen springs that were in there?

Smoother idle is all you get with the GMS connectors.

The factory COP springs wire diameter was about double what the Accel/Rally COP springs were. I was not impressed with the factory ones but the Accels being so much thinner really surprised me.

If I hadn't just dropped $300 on new OEM COPs I would think about trying the Accel coils again w/the GMS connectors. I'll either keep them on the shelf in case I need them later or sell them cheap eventually.
