I recently had a reputable speed shop install a set of Ford Racing 4:10 gears. Had both rear axles replaced and used the Ford Racing Install Kit. The rear end has a very slight whine when my foot isn't in the gas at around 50 mph and above. The installer says a slight whining is nomal and is a factor of "how deep" the gears are set. The deeper the gears are set the more reliability but a side affect is gear whine. I'm fine with the slight whine if the trade off is a more robust rear end.

Thoughts?

IMO... Any whine is a sign of improperly setup gears.

Never heard about setting gears deep.

Totally sucks when most people have a set of gears installed. And they are not installed correctly. You are replacing a part that's not broken and doesn't need to be replaced. It was a crappy nervous feeling in the back of my head knowing nothing was wrong with my 3.55's and replacing perfectly good gears with another set of perfectly good gears and hoping for a correct install.

Mine are fine too. The mechanic is full of it.

Set up correctly, the gears should not make a sound.

BTW, no noise from my gears, either.

Take it back right away and have them fix it. I had mine installed for about 4-5k miles and then started hearing a lot of whine. Took it back to the person who did the install and two bearings were notched and pitted. Replaced the bearings and it's sooo quiet now.
