By the time my car is done being built it should do high 11s. Being that I have already done mid and low 12s without any breakage, do I really need to upgrade to 31s? Or is this just necessary for cars doing low 11s or are track cars?

I was wondering the same thing.

I'd do it just to be safe.
Just like a driveshaft hoop. Do you need it probably not........ but it's nice to have just in case.....

The harder you launch, the more stress on the axles.

If you start running 11's, you'll undoubtedly be coming out of the hole faster, i.e. hooking up a lot better. Prolly just a matter or time before an axle goes BOOM!

NATEHAWK ran 11's on stock 28 splines.

He also snapped an axle at the track too!!!

Take your chances if you want to bro!

I ran all my times with 28 spline axels with no problem but its still gambling.
Put them on specially if your using DR's.

Im running 28spliners on a Detroit true-trac differential. Unless you are drag racing it hard and often, you should be OK. If the car never visits the strip and doesnt see genuine "hard launches" (slicks, drag radials) then you should be more than OK.
I have 30+ passes of super hard launches, and I have yet to see a problem. But yes, like a driveshaft loop, it is money well spent for assurance.
Joe (TripleThreat) is running a complete stock rear on his purple, which runs 11.2-11.4. Even down to the control arms.

You'll break em if you get wheel hop with DR's. If you stay on street tires you'll prolly be OK. When the wheels start hoppin axles start breakin.

I will be using DRs at the track, but the car maybe get's 20 runs a year... if that.

I still have the 28 spline axles in, I've been waiting for them to break since 09... still going though.

That is my theory as well. When they break. Overhaul drivetrain to the axles and pmkin.

And any other damage that is caused..............

It only takes one time --and it makes for a larger expense than the upgrade itself----makes for a better mine and 'car body' so to speak....specially if you play a bit and do the track ....If you have gone to any length to mod your car --that should definitely be on your list as well.

A broken axle wont cause much collateral damage. My car has NEVER ever hopped. And I would go on a limb and say roots blowers with such high torque on demand have a greater propensity of early failure.

My cars hopped on me when i was running DR's not a good feeling. will be upgrading axles before the stall goes in just to be safe. :)

Dom, replace the damn things. the tow home would be as much as the axles anyway.

Oh I will Dave. Just wanted to check and see if I could make a run down the track when Zack is done, before I do the rear end work. Looks like the car might not make it to the track for a run until fall. :(

Oh well. Better safe than sorry.

I wonder if the axles are the luck of the draw or if the failures we had on the 03's were just a bad run. My thinking is their might have been more problems with the early ones and they break alot/have more problems then the later 03', 04's.

Not sure how to prove/check that but it is just weird how some break and others dont when alot of HP is applied.

It is not the first time i hear faillure of the early 03 axle shaft.
I'm sure there is a tbs for that somewhere

Yeah your probaly right. I was just going on the mindset of, if it isn't broke yet don't fix it. I'll end up replacing everythng at once. When I get the money together.
