View Full Version : Noise from rear end just started-No not me,the MM

Purchased a used 300a mm last week and all was quiet on the 150 mile ride home. However I am now hearing what appears to be rear end noise coming from the rear, sounds like the right side to me. A low pitched whirring sound, kinda like a woo, woo, woo, (Yea I know I'll get ribbed for that description), that increases in frequency as the speed increases.
Need to get it checked out before I put any more miles on it and being disabled I'm not able to do the work myself.
Car has 85K on it and otherwise appears tight.
Anyone know of a reputable shop in the Kansas City area that I can take it too for a honest evaluation on what the problem is? Axles, gears etc?
Thanks,
Mike
Could be something as simple as a wire you kicked up from the road and it is wrapped around something back there. Maybe someone on here that lives close will chime in and check it out for you before you spend money at a dealership/repair shop.

I hope your right. Very few Marauders left around here anymore. Never where many to start with and the dealerships are useless..
Thanks

Check to see if there's any fluid leaking on the rear end. Look in around the tire well for something stuck. Does the sound change any when you apply the brake. If so could be a something with the brakes.

No fluid leaking anywhere that I can see, dry and clean underneath, remarkably so, but not so much that it appears to have been powerwashed or something.
Will have son take a look underneath and around rear wheels for any thing wrapped around axle(s) or wheel?
Thanks,
Mike

A low pitched whirring sound, kinda like a woo, woo, woo, (Yea I know I'll get ribbed for that description), that increases in frequency as the speed increases. No ribbing from me as that's EXACTLY what Phoebe sounded like. I will practically guarantee your right axle shaft is kaput. When I get home I'll post the pic of what I found. (It isn't pretty- may not be suitable for sensitive viewers-parental guidance is suggested)
Interestingly the left shaft was fine and didn't need replacement, but I figured I did NOT want to do the job twice and axles are not that expensive.
On advice from Babbage, I used DORMAN Part # 630214 (http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1387829,parttype,104 39) from Rock Auto...quiet as a churchmouse now.
Oh yeah, Ford now recommends synthetic 75W-140 for the Panther rear ends.
Get yourself a Victor Reinz diff cover gasket from CarQuest, too.

300A are notorious for weak axles and the noise you are describing is the sure sign. Sparta sells the rebuild kits complete with new axle seals and bearings. Since you'll be pulling it apart to change out the axle, may as well replace the wearable items.

Any advantage of the Ford part over the Dorman from Rock Auto?

The Ford kit comes with 2 new axles w/ABS rings , outer axle bearings, seals, pin bolt, gasket, and fluids. I have no idea who actually makes Ford's or Dorman's axles, but I'll stick with Ford.

justbob, that's an amazing price...
The last time I went to buy the kit from the dealer, they told me it was over $500 and would NOT give me a discount. I told them to stick it and got the Dormans for half that...and yet dealers will complain that no one comes to them to have work done...imagine that. :shake:
I agree...if you can get the Ford kit for a reasonable price, go for it.

I kinda fibbed to them asking why is it that every Ford dealer I ask, especially online, I get a different price??? He said that is weird, what kind of prices? I said the best was $275 shipped and he said "how about 10% over cost? SOLD. It took no bickering at all.

Do the Dorman axles have the tone rings installed?

Yeah, but you can heat up the factory ones to remove.

I believe this is starting to happen on my 04' 300B.
Under 20mph you can hear the woo woo woo woo and kinda feel it in the floor board. Hopefully its just bearings.

$308 at Tasca.
Yep, mines doing the same thing, usually hear it at 50 MPH and above. Going into the dealer next week, I'll ask about a discount since I "work" with the Sheriff's Department. '04 model.
