How would I disable the headlights from coming on when I turn on the wipers? I would like to run my fog light and no headlight with the wipers during daytime rain. Any suggestion on how to do this?

Why would you do this, NC state law says headlights on when operating wipers in the rain.

To have the option. I ran fog lights on my mustang like that without any problems. I think as long as you have on some type of lighting being driving/fog light or headlights they want mess with you

I to have wondered this as i work on a military installation where they ask you to dim your headlights as you drive on to the base. This is so that the gate guard doesn't get "blinded" as you approach temporarily imparing their vision as with looking into any bright light. Being in texas, you must have a front plate, like most states, and when raining gate guards are forced to stare straight into my HIDs even though they are looking for a front plate.
I want to find this out so that on rainy days i can give those guys a break. There are so many cars equipped with this feature now, it has to be h3ll for these guys on rainy evenings and nights. I understand that it is a necessary feature while driving in wet weather. But i've seen numerous SP members put their hand up to their brow as i approach the gate on a rainy night. I've even had to explain myself a few time, but they already sorta figured out why.

Maybe there was an issue with the SB's but this feature is mentioned in the manual. Mike you should go outside and run your wipers for like 30sec with the autolight turned off. The headlights are supposed come on anyway.

In NC you must have your HEADLIGHTS on when your wipers are in use. The law specifically says HEADLIGHTS.

I believe the automatic function of headlights coming on with the wipers is built in to the LCM.

Same thing ^^^^^ in Virginia. However, I still see people running in the rain without headlights. Guess that they don't understand that the lights are meant to help you be seen better by others when visibility is reduced.

I didn't know that mine did that until I read it here and tested it out. Maybe because of the darkness of a good storm I just assumed that it was the light sensor, but I tested and found that if my wipers were on for 15-20 sec, the headlights would turn on even if the light switch was in the off position.

So, here's one SB where it definitely works.

Yep, that's the way it's supposed to be programed.

There are a few LCM revisions. Some have different features than others.

I think by now it is clearly understood that this is a normal function and is very necessary. However, the question remains unanswered. Is there a way to disable it? Or at least adjust the delay after you turn your wipers off. Laws also state that headlights will be used during darkness, yet we can still disable the autolight function. There are also speed limits posted on every street, none of which are anywhere near 140mph. I could go on and on about options that we have in our cars that are illegal to exercise. My point is, some people dont want this answer so that they can break the law, like myself (refer to post #5). So, can anybody help with this function? BTW I mean no Diss to anyone.

All depends on if you're washing it with washer fluid and your wipers...;)

I wouldnt think so since it takes so long for this function to activate. I've never held on my washer for 20secs. thats like......forever.

I haven't run the washer that long continously, but I have run it in intervals and kept the wipers running over 30 sec. to knock off bug build up on the windshield.

A peek at a wiring diagram will give you all the info you need to disable them. I think it's a handy feature..... I got caught in the rain once.

I don't have a wiring diagram. Do you have one to reference? Let me know.

I know what the law says, I just put the question out there if anyone know how to disable the function. I'll continue to look for the solution and keep others that is interested posted.

An off-topic question fastblackmerc, but how does one obtain the wiring diagrams for an '04 MM? Do you purchase them direct from Ford or use the ones available via repair manuals from the likes of Chilton or Haynes?
Thanks in advance fastblackmerc!

Mine does! :dunno:

Light switch has to be in the "Auto" position to have them come on.

Do you purchase them direct from Ford or use the ones available via repair manuals from the likes of Chilton or Haynes? IMHO, the factory service manual is the only way to go. I don't know about Chilton's anymore (they USED to be good many years ago) but every Haynes manual I've ever had sucked. The pictures look like 7th generation copies and are tiny, while the text is frequently confusing or just plain wrong.

Nope, the Grand Marquis does it no matter where the light switch is positioned as long as you turn your wipers on and leave them for about 10-15 seconds. I thought it was weird when I first figured it out.

With the autolamps off it takes a good 20-30 seconds for the lights to kick on. My 2001 Vic had this too, I acutually get pissed that the 96 Lincoln does not turn on the lights I keep forgetting while driving in the rain.

my "03 has this feature, or should i say "had" this feature. i just simply cut the black wire that runs from the wiper module to the lcm, i just can't remember which black wire it was; there's two that come out of the wiper motor

Thank you for the clarification. As a former US Air Force Security Forces member, this is a great function that should be able to be controlled. I know what the law says in most states about this, but the safety and security of the war-fighting personnel and resources should be able to be maintained without being blinded.

I stand corrected. The LCM is revised on my 04 compared to my 01 Vic.

Turning off the autolamps while the wipers were running and the lights were on shut off the lights.

So maybe you could get a 04 LCM if the 03 does not do this
