So I recently noticed while detailing out my 03 MM, that I apparently have the dreaded clearcoat failure in this car. The trunk and hood seem to have crows feet problems, with the worst by far being the trunk. Now swirls, scratches, etc I can buff out all day long, but clearcoat failure...as I understand not much I can do.

However my understanding from Google Searching Crows Feet in Paint, is that the only way to fix this problem is a repaint...and the car has to be stripped all the way down to the metal! Yowsa!

I know paint failure was a pretty common problem with the 03s especially, so for those that had a repaint to fix this what were some ballparks on how much it ran ya.... I mean I didn't have a huge problem with a 1500-2000 paint job, but some of the detailing forums are saying over $5k which isn't gonna happen...period.

BTW mods if this isn't the correct place to post this feel free to move...I didn't see a paint section to post in, so just tried here..

Mine was re-painted in May of '05 at a cost of $$8,200.00 by the local Ford Dealer paid for by Factory  :)

!8200! Wow I could get another MM for that! End up spending more to paint the car than it cost to buy!

Possibly, but for 5k+, your paint job will stand taller than anything else that's out there....

A $5k sounds like glass remover, door jams, etc etc not just tape stuff off and shoot it.

You also don't want to just repaint certain areas cause they will stand out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the paint.

Go with Ford Midnight Tuxedo Black, its a deep black with metallic flake.
If I end up keeping my Taurus I might end up painting it that color.

I was quoted $7,500 from a place that specializes in doing show car finishes providing they did not have to make any body repairs then the price would go up.

3 polished layers of clear coat and the inside of the hood and trunk lids would be done as well. But they would fix clear coat scratches for free after words.

Yeah, but what would that other MM look like?

I highly doubt an $8,200 car would look new.

Do what I did. Sell it before it gets bad while its still good lookin and buy another one.

Doing that got me a car with 40k less miles and it was 5 grand cheaper.

Just got three estimates. 12K, 10,350 and 9985. All prices contigent on whether they found body work under the paint. All said that the body has to be stripped apart panel by panel, chemically stripped and then a bunch of other stuff.

There suggestion was unless I was going to make it a show car to take it to a professional detailer, have him slick it up as good as possible and just enjoy it. None of them would agree to polish it out after it was painted because its black.

So lets see,10K for the car, another 10K for paint if I want it to look great, a rear axle kit, and well, as of this moment, thats it. Basically about 22K in a car with 85k miles on it.

It still turns heads and runs like a scalded ape.

Maybe I'm a little too anal? Ya think!

When mine marauder was re-painted to was a huge job. MOst bodyshop really do not want to untake a large job of that nature. [smaller job turn a profit quicker and use less space & manpower]

Take a car apart to repaint it correctly is a big job. All glass removed, all door handles, both bumpers and all molding.

That's all the easy stuff, after stripping it bare, it will need sealed, primed, hand blocked, primed, hand blocked, primed, hand blocked, primed, hand blocked...... you get the idea. That all takes time, time = $$$.

Plus, you will need the room to store all the removed parts, interior, glass, all the lights, handles, mirrors etc....

Now, if you had a friend that owned a body shop, and they would let you participate in some of the work (providing you have that skill set), you can save huge $$$, maybe get a job offer, who knows....

I had my old 03 Cobra resprayed black with a red pearl(original color was black) at Macco. I bought the paint from a wholesaler and did the prep work/mask work myself and had it towed over to the shop. It had orange peel and a few dirt particles in the paint afterwards but I then spent about 300 bucks on foam wet sanding disks from 1000-4000 grit and buffed with 3M's compound afterward. Took the trash/orange peel(orange peel you will be left with after any paint job unless you look it over and show the final cut guy what YOU want....mirror finish) I let the paint stand after compounding for a few days, hit it with Meguairs Diamond Cut, Dual Action Polish, Swirl Polish and some Show Car Glaze (No wax for 30 days) and took it to a car show. There were cars there with 5k up paint jobs and I still won best paint of the show.

Prep materials-250.00 including sander
Paint-300.00
Paint Labor-500.00
Wet Sanding and Buffing supplies-350.00
1350.00 for a show winning paint job that I did mostly myself from reading...and I could do it cheaper now that I know what to buy and what not to. The Cobra has been painted for 3 years now and still owned locally by a friend, daily driven rain/snow/sun, no garage...paint has held up. We used an etching primer over the body work/paint and then a build primer...all sprayed by rattle can.

It took me a good 3 weeks to get the car prepped and ready to go. Final prep sanding was 800 grit with 4 passes...all wet with a DA sander.
