I travel more than I would like due to my job. I have to fill up every other day min. Gas prices are killing me. I have a sct x cal 2. It has two tunes one custom for pre 3:55 gears one custom for present 4:10 gears both on 93 octane. I want to use the middle blend forgot octane level. When I use anything other than 93 octane the motor detenates at cetain RPM levels under mild load. I was thinking of pulling some timing maybe 2 degree to fix problem. Can I do that with out harm & would I need to change any other parimiters other than timing ?

Pulling timing should work fine. Do it globally though. Try 2° increments until she doesn't ping anymore. Try lugging the engine too. This is where you should see the most detonation.

EGR valve in good working order?
That won't have anything to do with having a tune that he uses for 93 octane. He HAS to lower timing to use lower octane fuel if he gets pinging on the current tune. As said, only two tunes are for 93 so those tunes have enough timing advance that this is only option without getting a new tune.

While it seems gas prices off-Cape are not much different than on-Cape, there are a few spots worth stopping at if you're in the area. Stop and Shop gas stations (if you have a S&S card) in Pembroke, Rte 139 off Rte 3, Fairhaven on Rte 6 & 240 and in Wareham, Cranberry Highway. Also, if you're a BJ's Wholesale Club member, their gas station off Rte3, Exit 5 is worth stopping at. For some reason, the Cumberland Farms station on East Grove St in Middleborough is always less than most everywhere. It's in between Rte 105 and Rte 28 exit off 495.

Mary -thanks for the heads up on the gas stations. I will plug them into the gps.
Bill -thanks for the right info on how to pull timing. Can I assume my sct x cal 2 will say global timing ?
Why was I asked if the egr was working. I have no clue on how to check the egr valve. I do know I have a smell of exhaust in cabin when I run the heat or ac. The exhaust is all tight. Hose off pass pvc also fine no cracks.
