I was driving up a steep hill and once I got to the top I hear a blup blup blup cOming from under the hood. So I stopped and took a look. Nothing out of the ordinary visually. Took my tools out cause I figured maybe a spark plug popped out. I pull off the cover and see that one of my coils is broken and the spark plug popped off and the gap area crushed.
Is the broken coil and popped plug a common issue?

I don't think so that's actualy kind of where'd. Does your other coils look melted?. And if the other plugs look fine it should not be anything bigger then you think. I will call a ford tech tomorrow and let you know

Thanks. The other coils look fine just that one. Mine is at the dealer now because it also stripped the threading for the spark plug.

If installed correctly, yes.

It was a good thing that you had the OEM coil springs and not the GMS coil connectors. The connectors hold the plug down and let it arc inside the cam cover until it rubs through the boot and melts the coil and boot. I been a victim of this twice on the same cylinder.

Common problem on the early Ford modular motors, just about any repair shop will have the tools and kit to fix this. The dealer may try to replace your head, but insist they attempt a repair with the head on the motor. Ford has a spark plug thread repair kit. Should cost you a lot less than a head replacement. Google Ford spark plug and you will see several companies make a kit to repair this. I used a kit by Timesert to repair my 99 Ford 6.8 liter that spit out a plug.

Kind of related... Does anyone know if a new Aluminator will have a "full" set of threads?

Also Which Cylinder was the one that was stripped/ejected a plug -- for you guys that have had the problem.

#2 was mine. Kinda fitting since it has shi--y plug threads. :D
