View Full Version : 410 gears for a daily driver?

Been looking into getting 410 gears and was wondering from Marauder owners with them if you like them for a daily driver? I drive about 50% highway 50% city...Was trying to look up RPM numbers for 410's for different highway speeds, but I do realize that tire size plays a part in this, so I know I have to ask you guys exclusively...
1.How do you guys like them for a daily driver?
2. Was the gas mileage difference that noticeable?
3. What are your RPMs, in a Marauder w/ stock tires, at 60, 70 and 80MPH?
Thanks in advance!

Btw. my car is stock only with a 93 octane tune and a K&N CAI.

410's are a great mod for the MM.
Around town and on the road is much better than the 355's.
You will lose about a mile, maybe 2 per gallon, and the RPM's increase by only ~300 at speed.
Mileage around town for me is worse cause I can't seem to baby it.
;) :D

I noticed a 1mpg drop and about +200RPM at speed.
Do it, you won't regret it!

For me. It's all about the smiles per miles. Only once did drove normal for about a week and I had gotten 324 miles out of the tank. Mines a DD and I think it's the best bang for your buck mod!!
You'll love them so just do it!!

Best all around mod for the Marauder.

I think the around town mileage may be better with the 410`s as its easier to get the car rolling from a dead stop..
The RPM`s on mine are just under 3,000 @ 80mph compared to 2,200-2,300
in the stock car.....
My combined mileage (around town and highway) with 410`s is 18.4mpg.. Not too bad I feel for a real car..
I would go for it , like blackened 300a said , its the best bang for the buck mod for the marauder

The cars were originally meant to come from the factory equipped with 4.10s but Ford bean counters shot it down.
Hundreds of us have had them installed.
Your mileage won't suffer (most folks see < 2mpg difference) performance will be markedly improved, whtat's not to love.
Just do it.

My experience was similar to theirs ^^^. Actually gained a slight improvement in MPG around town as the car launches more easily, and lost a little on the highway.
If you can keep your foot out of it most of the time, with your 50/50 driving mix you should see very little change in overall mileage, while the improvement in performance when you DO indulge is very real.

4.10's are good to get the big car moving. As I have a high stall converter I went with 3.73's. At 80mph with 3.73's I'm spinning 2500, and get about 22mpg highway at 80-85.
You will need an SCT tune for 4.10 gears. Break them in easy with dinosaur gear oil for 500 miles then put in AMSOIL 75w-110 or RP 75w-140... Get a good reputable installer! Get the full master install kit - new seals -new bearings - new everything. Go with the Ford Racing ring and pinon brand. Buy it from a site sponsor like Sparta or Reinhart etc. You can also get a girdle to install at same time (a fancy diff cover)
Good luck!

At 60 mph I went from 1725 rpms (3.55 gears with 255/55-18 tires) to 2110 rpms (4.10 gears with 265/50-18 tires). Also makes my 3500 stall converter a little easier to deal with and power comes on quicker.

Don't forget the friction modifier! Or after 500 miles, repeat installation with new clutches. :D

The very best mod you can do is a tune. Second best are the gears.

I just had my gears installed yesterday and all I can say is WOW I should of done this a long time ago. You will love them. As for Rpms I only see a difference of an increase of 300 Rpms that's not bad. I just can't stop smiling when I step on it. You will love the feel of the 4.10s.

Same experience as everyone else here. I waited until mine was a toy to do the swap due to concerns about MPG. Don't wait, its not that big of a difference in MPG, but a huge difference in :D per mile. IIRC, I got 22.5 mpg going to Carlisle last year on I81. Doing the same this year and taking her to the beach in SC as our LS8 did not do any better on MPG, but was smaller for 4 people.

How is reverse? Is the MM harder to control full out in reverse with the 4:10?

If Ford would have priced these cars a couple thousand less, and told the bean counters where to stick it and put 4.10s in as OEM, Mercury would have sold a ton more Marauders, IMO.

Can only imagine if they had put the time/money into fitting the Lightning engine under the hood. Now that would have sold units!

I think the specs that Babcock wanted were turned down because Ford had to meet the EPA's ridiculous fleet mpg requirements. How else can you explain the awful shift program?

That too! Amsoil actually makes friction modifier that I used this spring when I changed the fluid....
Guess what I was trying to say earlier is do it right the first time or end up doing it again. You may even consider axles depending on mileage/wear. Mine were replaced...

I've recently done 4:10s, Lidio tune, Magnaflows, and a K & N CAI. It's like a different car. Much more responsive. Big difference off the line. The car feels and sounds awesome. As everyone else said, just 300 rpm difference and with overdrive the car is more then fine on the interstate

Had a stock rear in my SB. Have 4.10's in the DPB. My mpg's went down about 1 mile to the gallon. BUT, as others have said, the car has pick up and just overall feels better.

If there is a place near you that specializes in Mustang repairs it's an easy task for them. If you don't get the pattern right it will be unbelievably noisy.

Hmm the sheer response may just win over a diehard 3.55 owner.
Mmm would love a nice late model 31 spline assy, then install the 4.10's. Keep the original 3.55 housing OR use the trac lock and 3.55 for the 96 Town Car??

I'm just terrified of them being noisey. I've got prices from Mustang shops in the area, but you never know until they're in.

Find a good shop that knows what they're doing any you won't have any issues with noise.

Now does it really matter which manufacture's gears to go with?
Ford; Ford Racing; Richmond; etc. Any real differences?

I used gears from Ford Racing Parts. Get an install kit, all the bearings and Redline 75w140 oil and your ready to go.

"New manufacturing technology utilizing a Face Hob Process which features a single pass pinion tooth machining operation compared to a conventional three pass process for machining. CNC cut and lapped gear teeth. Higher strength and better quality gears are produced with the Face Hob Process. NOTE: These new gears look a little different, the gear teeth are cut on a different angle and the ring gear has a bevel on the back of the gear."

Dude, if they're noisy, they were installed wrong. Ask the local Mustang guys who they use. If a shop doesn't do gears right, word will spread.

I had my reservations about the 4:10's for my DD Marauder - mostly gas mileage because I do a lot of highway driving, and wheel spin because I already had a lot even with the factory gears.
I got the 4:10 gears installed today and now that I've tried it, I would also highly recommend the upgrade. At highway speeds you're only gaining 200-300 RPM. I did increase my wheelspin more than before, but it's not uncontrollable by any means. The car is MUCH more responsive with the 4:10 gears installed and feels like it "should."
Because of the low end power I might recommend against it if you have a roots-style or twin screw blower (unless you're like DOOM and hate to keep tires for a very long time). But for centri or NA it is a VERY big performance improvement. Installed properly they are just as quiet as the factory gears.

4.10s are a common gear for a automatic mustang and they have much shorter tires. I wouldn't hesitate to go with 4.30s with the much taller marauder tires.

Alot of members have tried 4:30's and have gone to 4:10's or back to 3:55's.
IMHO... you'll hate 4:30's in a DD.

I loved the 4.10s and 4.30s in my mustang and it had 25.6" tires. For a mustang 4.10s are the minimum most recommend and 4.30s with the taller marauder tire provide the same hwy rpms as the 4.10s in the mustang.
Like any other mod it comes down to personal preference and what the person wants from the car i.e, performance, driveability, mpg.
