Engine oil pressure gauge

Located in the lower center of the
instrument panel, indicates engine
oil pressure. If the pointer drops
below the normal operating range
(50–75 psi) or the minimum low (6
psi) pressure when the engine is
running, stop your vehicle as soon
as possible, shut off the engine and
check the oil level. Add oil if
necessary.
Do not continue to operate your
engine as long as the pointer is out of the normal operating range.
Otherwise, your engine may be severely damaged.

Seriously? How could they even publish this knowing that the oil pressure gauge is really an idiot light.

If the "gauge" drops below 6 lbs, it's prolly already too late... ;)

What is its running at 7psi? That means I'm good to go??? :shake:

crouse, that's exactly why they DID write that...BECAUSE it's a fake and there's no way of knowing what the actual pressure is, so to be safe, and to make people THINK it's a real gauge, they cover their asses with double-speak.

Anyone with half a clue has replaced the idiot-gauge with a real one anyway.

AFAIK every Ford vehicle with a gauge since 1990 has the same stupid setup, at least everything I've owned has...

I really don't give a rat's ass about it being real. No one ever looks at it anyway.

I recently did my real autometer conversion with writeup. Mine works correctly now!

on all my ford trucks with gauges, I found that I could bypass the resistor on the back, and replace the sender with a 80s sender unit, and then the factory gauge would work as a gauge. when I looked at our fake gauge it does not appear to be fixable, so the gauge mod is the best option. I want to do this this year.

Just goes to show you don't believe everything you read!
Noteworthy: Just had to replace the sending unit on my Autometer Guage. It has 100 psi stamped on it. Sometimes I have near that on a cold engine. I don't know if I exceeded the operational range or just got a bad one.
I just started the car one morning and it decided not to work.

I've seen close to 100 on mine, cold, as well.

I can see why Ford would be hesitant to install real gauges as the pressure will fluctuate subtantially, depending on rpm and engine temp.

Close to 100 psi, cold idle, 25 psi warm idle; for a lot of the car buying public with limited mechanical knowledge, they'd prolly figure something was wrong with their car and head straight to the dealer with it.

That is the exact reason the idiot gauge was used, too many complaints from '87-'89 5.0 Mustang owners that oil pressure was low at idle...

bahhh, who needs oil pressure anyways. mine sits at the line between 0 and 25 hot idle.

Same here.

What do you run for oil, 5W-20?

Where's your write-up? There is one in the "Reviews" area of the site; but the pictures only come up as "X"'s on the screen.

That's the nature of electrical sending units - they eventually die. I went mechanical, and have seen over 100 psi once or twice.

Same here. I was kind of worried at first.

I guess the oil viscosity goes down when it gets up to operating temps!

It's not even an idiot light. It's 100% for show. When my oil pressure dropped dangerously low right before I needed a new engine (:mad2:), it still read about 65psi.

:soapbox: :
The fact that these things are fake is NOT common knowledge and should be permanently posted on the site home page for all to see. Could save someone else thousands of dollars.
