The stealership says my air ride compressor is going out. I was quoted $560 + tax. Retail for the part is 421.38. I can get one from Tasca Ford for 278.11. Can anyone describe and/or post a picture of where it is? The service advisor said he "thought" it was "way down on the passenger side. You can feel it but you can't see it." He didn't seem willing to show me. The chattering sounds like to me that it is coming from the driver's side. Since they had it, it's more intermittent than it was. Thanks.

He wasn't willing to show you because he's a moron and doesn't know where it is.
It's directly under the air filter box and is very easy to DIY. Many of us have had good luck with replacement units from Arnott (http://www.arnottindustries.com/part_FORD_Air_Suspension_Parts _yid1_pid9_gid45.html).

Do you access it from above by taking out the box or from below?

Arnott is 200 and it's better then factory. It's really easy to install but you will want to Jack up the front there's 3 screws in front of the driver side tire. Then remove the air box and washer fluid tank. There's a red ring on the compressor Line get a flat head to push it in and pull out

Man! I love http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/ The same problem I have had you guys are having the same ones. I replaces mines a couple of years ago. It was very easy to do. I went to Precision Tune they told me it going to be $840! I told him I don't have the money to fix it. He call me back and said I can do it for $720. I got my pump from a friend of mine the that own a shop it was $200.

No need to jack the car up. Ask dakslim, just drilled more holes in his tray for drainage.
Remove the washer bottle (really not necessary but it will give you extra room to work.
Turn the wheels all the way to the right.
Spray some rust penetrant on the 3 nuts underneath the compressor.
Disconnect the airline (push in the retainer while pulling on the line).
Disconnect the electrical connector.
With a 10mm socket, remove the 3 nuts.
Remove the compressor
Drill extra holes in the corners of the tray to facilitate better drainage. Use a 5/8" or 1/2" drill bit.
Just reinstall reversing the steps above.

Arnott is ... better then factory.
From my experience, this isn't true.
When my '94 MGM needed new air springs, I bought the pump+bags kit from Arnott, which was only about $30 more (at the time) than bags alone. The OEM pump was still working, but the air dryer was exposed to leaking springs, so needed to be replaced (according to the Arnott warranty). Anyway, kept the OEM pump, which was about 12 years old or so, but installed the Arnott. It lasted about 3 years before wearing out - it still ran, but could not hold pressure anymore. I put the original pump back in after killing the replacement.
If I should need a replacement pump, I'll find a used OEM pump before going aftermarket again.
I was happy with the springs, though.
