I just got 2 255/35/18 and 2 225/40/18 for free. I was wondering if these will work on an '04. I took them because they were free and figured you guys could help me figure this out. thanks in advance.

I'll wait for others to chime in but I'd use them for brake tq practice.
Also, if they don't work you can always shut off the tc when you start the car.

I work at a BMW store and we bought a Z4 from the auction with these tires on it. We are certifying the car, and the tires aren't "BMW approved" for certification. We had to put run flats on the Z4, so my used car manager told me I could have these for free. I'm just worried about traction control issues if I install them.

it appears you should be ok, they look to have that needed 3% height difference

If you put them on the front they will be fine but not on the rear. the 225 is 25" tall and the 255 is 25.1" tall.

Don't know sizing very well with traction control ...
But the nt555, love the tire.

Which ones should I put on the front? What size rear tires should i go with?

Both tires would only work on the front.
The tires on the Z4 aren't staggered, they are just larger in the rear due to the design of the car. Plus also the 255/40-18 IMHO would be quite harsh or bumpy up front. I run 255/45-18 and its pretty rough but I do a lot of highway so I don't mind it.

The OEM rears (245/55/18) are 28.61" diameter.
255/55/18 (which is a common aftermarket replacement rear tire) is 29.04" diameter.
The OEM front tires (235/50/18) are 27.25" diameter, this is over 2" taller than the tires you've got; IMO, the short tires would look like crap, wouldn't come anywhere near filling out the wheel well.

So I guess I should sell them?...I was hoping to be able to use at least 2 of them....

You can use them on your car, I just don't think they'll look very good; way too small on the front.
If you do use them, you'll need to find a smaller diameter tire for the rear, something that will maintain the 3% to 5% stagger ratio (25.9" to 26.4")
Car will look like

but hey, knock yourself out.

I'd keep the 255/35 series tires just in case you get in a jam and need tires. The 225/40 are just too small.
