I think we've already thrashed the OIL change interval into the ground, but what is everyone's take on AIR and FUEL filter changes?

I've already changed the air filter in the Blackbird (at 12k), and I'm thinking of doing it again at the next oil change at 25k, along with the fuel filter...

Well if you use synthetic air the interval is. . . unless it's a month with an 'R' in it . . . :)

I'm running 9k on air and 24k on fuel.

OK, OK, I guess I deserved that... grumble...grumble

Hey Glenn, doesn't YOUR MM have a "Type R" badge on it...?

:nono: Type Rrrrrrrrrrrr! :mad2: Bad RF! Bad!

One day, "Powered by Rienhard" perhaps.

I thought all the intervals you were asking for were in the book?

They are...so are the "recommended" oil change intervals, but there are 1,771,561 differing opinions on THAT, so I just wanted to see what others were doing with the air and fuel filters...

...except for Sarge, who changes filters more frequently than he changes underpants...(they DO wear underpants under kilts, right?...RIGHT?! )

I know a LOT of people (not on THIS board, of course ;) ) never think to change the fuel filter until the car dies somewhere...and only change the air filter when it gets all roagy...

RF: This is my "real" world schedule.
Fuel filter every 35,000.
Flush radiator once a year.
Air filter every other oil change.
Oil & filter every 3,000. (5W-20)
Trans flush & filter every 30,000.
Rear oil every 60,000.
Tires--just keep an eye on 'em
Relpace all belts and hoses every 2 years.

Works for me:)

Jim - You change the air filter every 6K ? That's cool. I usually change the air filter between 10 and 12K. Fuel at 25K.

John: While there is no "rule of thumb" for the time/mileage interviles I have chosen they work for me in the "real" world.

I plan on keping the Marauder for a long time.

I am lucky enough that it is not my commuter car:)

I have seen air filters get gummed up quicker than that.

I have close friends (not Marauders) that don't belive in oil changes:mad: :alone:

These "people" drive company cars right into the ground:mad:

Trick is to find outwhat works for you and your location and car:)

Good advise Jim. I haven't had much experience running fleet vehicles, but have recently been put in charge of my companies fleet of Tractor/Trailers. Oi! What a headache!

Filter changes in general are cheap insurance. $5 for a filter is worth it IMHO.

I know people too that only change engine oil annualy, never change trans fluid or coolant or fuel filter. . . but for some sick reason, the still go with the 'change oil filter every second oil change' rule too. And they wonder why their car will never start at -40c. :shake:

My CV is 11 years old, and it has yet to not start for me on coooold winter mornings.

You mean there is a filter in the fuel line? Who knew? Next I'll be hearing someone say that we have to check our tire pressure.

Not if you use synthetic air...

Anyone know where the blinker fluid filter is located and what the recommended change interval is?

In my vehicles, this is the schedule i've generally taken.......

Oil and filter every 5k miles after I convert to full synthetic
fuel filter every 25k miles
air filter every 12k miles
initial tranny flush at 12k miles, then every 30k miles afterward after I convert it to synthetic
brake fluid every 30k miles

I'm not sure about when the change this yellow coolant since i've never seen it before though...........

That looks like a winning combo to me.
With the following exceptions:

1. Fuel filter every 25,000.
2. Trans flush & filter 25,000. (12,500 on factory fill)
3. Oil filter (FF) 12,500, Oil filter (BP) 25,000, and oil every 25,000 (This is done using By-pass filtration, Oil analysis, and PAO synthetic oil).
4. Air filter is changed at 12,500. (with FF Oil filter)

I run all my maintenence through some software I bought. It works slick. I've included the link if anyone is interested. The website is kinda chessy, but it is a good program.

http://www.lonewolf-software.com/automotivewolf.htm

Having good maintenence records, not just practices, sure could help in warranty issues, or heaven forbid, court cases.

How about your brake and PS fluids? Anyone?

I tend to change those during 'major' maintainence. At about 50,000km (25,000 mile) intervals, or if I'm doing major upgrades such as calipers.

A small amount gets changed then anyway; might as well do it all. I don't have the tool to accommodate ABS systems, so I usually leave brake fluid to the pros.

I forgot to list it when I replied, but I generally change the power steering fluid every 30k miles. Also, if you want to change the brake fluid at home, what you can do is a gravity bleed which may take some time. To make things easier, you can use a brake fluid that is a different color, like ATE Super Blue Racing Dot 4 fluid(what I use) and that will aid when you do a gravity bleed. As long as you don't allow the brake fluid resevoir to go dry, you'll be fine.

Just remember, the dirtier that air filter appears the cleaner the air entering the engine really is. Overservicing your air filter is IMO a false economy in that light.

In Europe, Brake Fluid is flushed every 2 years.

I would flush the power steering every time you do the transmission oil.
They are both hydraulic, and it is just easier to remember to do them that way.
Flushing the Power Steering is a very good way to keep your rack from wearing out.
Fresh Oil keeps the rack temps down, and that makes the rack seals live longer.
