View Full Version : Don Garlits Museum August 13th

Saturday, August 13rd is the date.
Once again, those of you within driving distance should consider attending.
This is a first class museum that contains some cars the ol' Swamp Rat made history with.
Just my opinion, but Don doesn't need to keep this museum open and he's getting up there (69 or so), if he closes the doors in the future you will be sorry you missed it...
Check this link out:
http://www.garlits.com/
For those of you that may consider coming from out of state, there are hotels withing feet of the museum.
Please chime in if you are still interested, I'd like to keep a head count.
(Maybe a Vendor would like to sponsor a lunch or something?) :D

As for me any day is good, I live 12miles from that place.

August 13th, 2 Cars, 3 adults.
If we get enough folks to commit, I will call the museum to see if they offer any group discounts.
Once again, this is a must see museum if you are a car guy or girl...

Well, you are about 5 hours away, I am about 2 hours away so I wouldn't mind early afternoon if that works with everybody.

Early afternoon works for me too, afterwards we car also go ride some go-karts at OPG for a 55mph thrill. The place is two exits north of the museum.

I'm still working 70+ hours a week and not sure when the schedule will get any better. If I have an off day right now I use it to catch up on sleep.

By the way, your car sounded great when you passed me after the SSM picnic, I also really could tell how stiff your suspension is, very little travel seen...

I'm going to try, just can't guarantee it at this time. Thanks for the compliment on the exhaust, been thinking about trying to quiet it down but everyone keeps telling me it sounds great so I'm going to leave it alone awhile. Maybe I'm just getting old but it gets to me on long rides sometimes.
The car handles and rides like a mustang since installing the Naake kit. I like it except for the front springs suck and bottom out occasionally.
Going to be swapping the factory springs back on with the QA1 shocks using a copy of fordnuts design for a lower perch. Should handle great and ride a bit smoother then. If I make it to the meet I give you the keys to take it for a spin.

I have a weekend place just outside Ocklawaha, only 30 minutes from the museum. Hopefully I will be able to go up there the weekend of the event and meet everyone there at the museum. I went on a similar trip several years ago and it was great fun.
There is a Cracker Barrel next door to the museum.

This is a bump, and a mention that is a treasure right here in our back yard. Both a drag racing heritage site, and a muscle car / classic antique car museum. Mix in a road trip with a bunch of Marauders and Panthers (we don't judge - all are welcome!) and you have ONE GOOD TIME. Don't miss this!

I've been reading the thread for a time too. Don't know if I have to work that day untila few days prior. If its later in the afternoon I might could leave work early.
Garlit's is a "can't miss" for those that have never experienced it. Thoroughly gearhead oriented in the Drag race museum and thoroughly historical in the Antique museum. I really can't say which I liked more!

There's a Cracker Barrel in front of the Museum.
If we get a good count I will reserve a big table along with checking if we can get a group discount at the museum.
This is really worth attending if you like the history of drag racing.
Don has his original 1953 dragster on display, along with countless cool cars in the museum.
If you like Drag Racing, MMs and classic cars and live within 2-3 hours of the museum, it is worth your time.
It's a few minutes north of the I75/Florida Turnpike merge.
Hope to see you there...

For me it is Ron. The museum is actually 2 big buildings connected by a breezeway.
There's a huge parking area we can use to hang out, but to me it's about the museum.

I still can't say 100% until probably Thursday night or Friday. Really overloaded at work at the moment and just don't know if I'll have the day available.
I should mention that you MUST allow about three hours to walking and gawking in that drag racing museum alone. There is iterations of drag cars I've never heard of and many I knew, but have never been up close to.
Every possible engine imaginable - Rat motors, Ford SOHC and BOSS429's, Early Hemis and Wedgies, Stage Buicks, RamAirs, Rocket motors, etc. And that's just the "production" stuff from way back. Then you get into the Allison Aircraft (P39 Invader/P51 Mustang) engines, the Cadillac Tank engines, Detroits, Rodac, Keith Black, General Electric non-afterburning and afterburning Turbines. And in those front-engined cars, all that power was channelled right between their legs until Big Daddy stretched it out and moved it to the back.
With the videos and graphic presentations and all the information at each car, it's just way too much to see in an hour or two and that's just the drag side. The antique museum is killer too!
If you're a gearhead and have never been there or just drove past it a hundred times like I used to, you owe it to yourself to go take a gander - if not this weekend, some other time by yourself. You'll say, "I shoulda done it sooner" like me.
