I'm looking to complete my 2 1/2" exhaust on the original "Impala Slayer" and am looking for mufflers that flow but sound closest to the OEM mufflers (Low noise level) and are stainless. Any suggestions?:dunno:

I think some of the Magnaflows are pretty quiet, Vernon, but don't know which series. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

What, you don't like the Aero Turbines? ;) -----> :D

(When Dave gave me a ride in the car up to the Philly airport, it was so loud it was hard to hold a conversation at speed, so I know exactly what you're talking about.)

I'm actually still running the OEM mufflers.

Shorty headers, a set of high flow cats into a Mac Pro-Chamber mid pipe feeding into stock exhaust from the mufflers on back; with the exception of res-delete 4" tips. Just as bit louder than completely stock, but still very quiet overall. I'm very pleased with the set-up.

I have the kooks headers/x pipe/magnaflows and it was way too loud for me. I removed the exhaust extensions and replaced them with two magnaflow magnapack bullet muffler tailpipe extensions. This lowered the sound level to slightly more than stock. This does change the exhaust outlet appearance.

Borla.... The long ones are quieter.

My super 44s are just a hair above stock. I have fully stock exhaust with the exception of the flowmasters. Silent at idle. the actual volume is very similar to stock but the pitch is a bit lower and the sound has more aggression. So if you're looking for subtle aggression...i would say Flowmaster super 44s is the way to go.

Good stuff, John! Looks like the Borla XS would be a good choice for a quiet muffler with good performance characteristics.

Comparative examples of decibel levels. Keep in mind that decibels measure sound intensity; dB level increases are not linear. (A sound level of 110 dB is 16 times as loud as 70 dB.):

Normal conversation (3-5') - 60-70dB

Stock automobile exhaust system (5-10') 65 - 75 dB

Garbage disposal, dishwasher, average factory, freight train (at 15 meters) - 80 dB

Diesel train at 45 mph at 100 ft - 83 dB

Diesel truck 40 mph at 50 ft - 84 dB

Milling machine - 85 dB

Food blender, propeller plane flyover at 1000 ft - 88 dB

Average human pain threshold: 110dB
Live rock music 108 - 114 dB

Riveting machine - 110 dB

Steel mill, auto horn at 1 meter, turbo-fan aircraft at takeoff power at 200 ft - 118 dB

I believe those test results are for 14" mufflers. Several of those brands also offer 18" versios of the same mufflers, which will be quieter. Thet aren't tested for this table since the longer mufflers won't fit Mustangs and other sporty coupes. But they are perfect for our cars.

However, at wide open throttle, watch out.
