View Full Version : What to do about SPAZ intake?

Well yet again my Spaz lower intake has cracked welds. My idle makes the engine feel like Im running big lopey cam in it and I have oil in the valley of the engine under the intake. I'm not running a catch can so thats PVC oil draining out. (No, I didnt put a drain in it to save the cash on a catch can )

I researched and found a guy who has a proven reputation on how to repair these things. He quoted me $450+shipping to once and for all seal this lower intake.
My question is, this added expense of $450+ puts this intake up to just under $1500 total investment in this POS. Would it be worth it to fix it or just send out a stock lower manifold to be extrude honed and polished? I'm thinking that would run me more more for the latter, but is the performance gain worth it over the short runner?

i just cant see putting that kind of $$ into an oe intake, for that kind of money you could get a hogan sheet metal intake fabed to your specs!

well for about 2k

Todd Warren can do it I'm sure. Nick had my old one rebuilt. Did you strengthen the bottom metal plate at all or was it just reweld? I had an extra plate welded on mine and it made that sob really solid, no flex at all.

Anybody ever hold this guy accountable? I would have a class action suit against this clown, as most of you if not all had serious problems with this garbage.

The metal that was used originally was a paper thin piece of tin that not only caused a hollow noise in the intake, but cracked the welds within a few hundred miles due to it vibrating. I had it repaired with a 1/4" thick piece of aluminum and re-welded. It looked very strong when I got it back, but I guess not. It was done as a favor so I can't argue with free. I did a search and Zack had posted a thread a year ago about a guy who repairs them, thats who I contacted.

He packed up and disappeared claiming a divorce and illness as a reason for his horrid business practices.
I also had to wait about 4 months after constant emails to get the intake sent back to me. :shake:

Was he the guy who repaired yours? Tonight Im having it smoke tested to see how bad it is, I'll most likely be pulling this off next weekend and replacing with a stock one.
I'll probably end up going this route to prevent throwing more money into it. :(

Talk to toomanyfords he's got a primo intake.;)

At this point you'd be better off saving your pennies for a blower. You've had nothing but headaches with this intake since you got it.

Melt it down and make an MV 9 trophy out of it.

Paul I've told you 100 times, put the original lower back in and call it a day, get some low end torque back from those long runners.

Pulled the lower intake off yesterday and found this...

Sorry for the crude cell phone pic, but thats a giant crack in the weld covered by oil and carbon.
I went ahead and installed a stock one back on and not only gained what feels like a lot more down low power, but it also smoothed out the idle and I have much better brakes. Totally different driving experience without this giant vacuum leak bolted to the top of my engine. :shake:
I also had to tidy up some of the wiring from my engine install, like the ground wire being placed in the wrong spot and the coil resistor being bolted to the throttle cable bracket which frayed the wire. I also installed a new EGR/DPFE and made sure everything is secured and tidied up. Took a total of 2 hours to make the car so much more enjoyable to drive again.

Now its time to look into a new air compressor. Seems to take a lot longer to fill the rear bags lately. :(

Might be a weight problem.
Mine has been filling up faster since I lost 20 lbs. from the surgery last week!:D

That was a joke.

Have you pulled the compressor and taken it apart to clean it up and re-lube the piston & crank?
Mine has been running great for the last two years now and very quiet - you can barely hear it when it runs.

I was actually going to attempt that today. Glad to hear you dropped 20lbs! Lets throw a huge BBQ so you can get back to your fighting weight. ;)

Is there a link on how to do this?

What a horrible sight it was, carbon stain on the intake along with oil oozing out of it.... it was a great sight to watch Paul reverse out of the shop and with a flick of the go pedal light up the rear rubber through 1st gear and screech into 2nd. Just more proof that short runners don't work well N/A on these motors.
