I'm getting a little tired of how difficult it is to get the oil filter out from the mess of suspension components, hoses, and everything else in the way, when changing the oil. My '96 T-bird was the same PITA.

I know there is a "spill shield" that's available; but your wrist has to be contorted just to get the filter out; and doesn't solve the problem.

Is there a kit to relocate the filter somewhere easier?

I'm thinking this will make it easier still, when I replace the oil sender (which is going to take up even more space), when I do my guage replacement.

Talk to Marauderjack. He did this a long time ago. In fact, there could be a thread on this somewhere.

I never had any problems. I unscrew it, tip it upside down to get the oil out, then fish it by the front of the engine. Not terribly difficult. I have seen worse. My ranger had the little funnel under the filter that would make draining it super easy. Marauder spilled all over the steering.

Ever change the filter on a Fiero? :mad2:I think it was the mid engine v6 that I kept burning myself on...

there are filter relocation kits, or you can buy the adapters, and make your own braided steel lines

I just let it make the mess and spray it off with cleaner.

There....fixed it for ya!

Yes, my college girlfriend owned a Fiero.
After the first oil change, I made her take it to the dealer for oil changes.
BTW: I thought that it was a POS back when it was brand new!

To the original thread inquiry: I made my own remote mount oil filter set-up using mostly Canton parts and Aeroquip hose/fittings.
My oil filter now sits out on the left front frame rail, just below the air ride compressor.

I thought about doing this mod. Never got around to it and don't miss having not done it. Joe does great work and his self done relocation kit is something to emulate. If it is not done correctly I have heard of many sad stories where it can be more trouble than leaving it as is. Good luck.

My very first.... THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!

Now that that's done, I find that unscrewing the filter halfway so it drains out in a staight line makes the cleanup minimal. Trying to take the filter off quickly while it's dripping results in a lot more mess.

Had a good friend who had a brand new V6 5spd Fiero, great drive train but what a piece of junk otherwise. He had nothing but problems with it from new!
They are all Ferrari s now...

Oops. I forgot about that. I had a K&N CAI, so it made it a little easier to get the filter out.

I take it to the dealer, $17.00 no problem.

Tried that once. After the filter was off, I realized that I couldn't get it up past the engine. I guess it is possible (if you guys have done it); and I'll have to try again. That would be much easier.

( I really do need to order that "drain-deflector")

That's a good deal for oil change & at the dealer. Must be hurting for sales...any type of solicitations for repairs when you pickup after the service???

This is the only problem I have with stealerships...

$17 for a synthetic change. 6 quarts of oil and a filter
Sounds kinda wierd to me.

Porcaro Ford in Racine Wi. They have a coupon in todays paper $17.00 plus tax. I may have to pay for the extra quart, I don't remember from last time. They don't try to sell me anything else.

Glad to hear that they don't try to sell you anything else.

Again, that's a good deal for an oil change but make sure its 5-20w oil. Sometimes these specials have selected oils.

Or charge extra $$$ for full synthetic.

$17??? Something isn't right here...that's $3/qt, a free filter, and free labour...if they're hurting for business, they'll be OUT of business charging prices like that.

Prefill the new filter until it's 3/4 full. Be sure to allow a few minutes between fills to allow the filter to soak in the oil.

Then, I run the car up on the drive way ramps, that can be purchased almost anywhere. With a "creeper" or other mat to make laying on the drive way more comfortable, attach a filter removal tool on the base of the filter and with a 3/8 socket drive (no extension required) loosen the filter, have a wide catch pan underneath to catch the spillage, which isn't much and remove the filter by hand (engine should be cool). The filter comes out very easy and doesn't need to be turned much from the vertical. Preposition paper towels where the oil spillage will occur it you want.

Clean the chassis parts with your favorite solvent and paper shop towel, voilą, the used filter is out, the driveway is clean and so is the chassis.

Make sure the old oil seal is removed with the old filter. put a little oil on the new seal before installing the new filter.

Do not over tighten the new filter just tool tight is good enough. Even hand tight is OK.

Some filter removal tools look the same and state they are the same size but slip when loosening the filter. Fit check with a new filter to see if it works. I think it has to do with the number of flutes on the grip side. The more flutes the better.

The tool on the left in the picture works, the one on the right does not, yet they came out of the same bin at advance auto parts. Happy motoring

I like when they suggest repairs. I'ts like a free inspection.

I do miss the days when they would vacuum out your car for you :(

But on the oil subject, I just wipe everything down with a cloth. A little oil slick never hurt anything.
