View Full Version : Stolen rims = Totalled Marauder???

Ok guys i have a question for you.

If you have a marauder lets say an immaculate 03 with 50k miles on it and you come outside and you car is sitting on bricks.

So you file your insurance claim for 4 new wheels.

My question is will the insurance company say your car is totalled seeing as 4 NEW RIMS are $1,400 a piece!!!

Were talking $5.600 for rims! Now include center caps & tires + labor.

Were probably looking at an estimate of 8 grand!!!

Thoughts???

No.

1. Because you cant get new OEM rims anymore only used or reps.
2. Why would they total a perfectly good car just for missing wheels?

I will wait to be put in my place if they do total it out because of only that.

Ive took reports on more than a few mm on bricks! some were owners trying to get over on there insurance , some actualy stolen!

if the car had full coverage you get a check issued for the retail value of the wheels, and tires, and more often than not they go with an aftermarket setup.

Just a simple question bro.
And as far as i know OEM rims are still available at the dealer. Someone please correct me if im wrong.

And to answer your 2nd question. Due to the price to replace them versus the price of the car would the insurance company call it a loss?

I see your point....but, and I am just throwing this out there, it would be ludicris to put a salvage title on a car just because of some missing wheels.

No....they will just give you a check for the "market value", most likely for non OEM (LKQ) rims....then if you want OEM rims you have to make up the difference. LKQ is what insurance companies like.

This situation happened to me, but at least the scumbags were nice enough to leave my car on jack stands... My insurance paid for 4 brand new OEM wheels as well as brand new rubber. The claim was around $6800. Since I could prove that the new tires only had about 500 miles on them, they were treated as new. I must say, it was a little disconcerting to come downstairs, look out the front bay window and notice the Marauder was sitting higher than normal and then to walk out and be greeting by your car land locked on jack stands.:eek::eek: I am insured with Erie, and they were great.

Off topic, but be careful there! Check for clearance issues with the widened wheels, might get some rubbing when turned lock to lock.

As far as i've been told...If the cost of the repair/replacement out weighs the book value of the vehicle.......TOTAL!! Im thinking that they may offer you a depreciated value of the brand new rims over 7 or 8 years(depending on the year model).

What profile are you going to go with? I tried 255/55/18's on the front and they wouldn't clear at full lock with about 1/2" - 3/4" downforce on the front fender (to simulate body roll under g-force).

If you run a lower profile tire, may be okay.

Well it did happen to me. My Ins issued me a check for retail price for tires + wheels. This happen back in Oct 2007, my car had about 1500 miles at the time. When the appraiser submitted what the OEM price was, the Ins had me take the brochure and photo copy the pics, they did not believe the wheels were that much. From that point I was under investagation, a fraud agent was sent out twice. The first time was to interview me about my finances and how the car was note was paid. He also went thru every room, closet and basement to make sure the wheels was not on property. The second time he came with a retired PO, these guys went up and down the block to interveiw people about what happen.

The Ins had me wait until the Police report came from HQ. At this point it was a 45 total day wait for the check. What I did find out is that alot of ins companies will pay a depreciated value on wheels and tires, but mine did not. Since mine was OEM it help some. Back in 2007 the price paid wad about $5500 for full retail replacement and balance. I did forget to add that pics was taken of the odometer to verify milage and vin.

What I found out is the Ins will only pay a certain percentage of the value of the car and no more. So if they determine the value of your Marauder @ $14000 they pay about 50-60% of the value claim for the loss (these numbers aren't exact). If they want to total it, they'll tell you what it will bring to them at auction and you can buy it back. I have an 04 with 3100 miles so I keep an eye on KBB value and they ( Ins Co ) will not pay KBB value on the car if it's totaled. They use a company that they (the Ins co ) started to further de-value a car.

This is why I say insurance companies are the scum of the world. They are your friend when you pay them, but when they have to pay up, the look for every way to save a nickle or two from going back to you.

So did they pay for 100% of the value of the wheels and tires.

Investigation? WOW!!!

Back in 2007 they did, but the car was still new to say. OEM wheels, caps, stock tires and balancing, total $5500. Photo copies of my brochure to futher prove the items were stock went a long way to justify the price.

Insurance co are in it for the bottom line only if they can save $100 on every claim that is millions at the end of the year. I manage a body shop and have had 2 cars in the last 2 weeks that came in with insurance co estimates for $1500 to $2000 both claims ended up in the $5k range. I tell all of my customers to bring there cars to the shop when the insurance adjuster is going to be out so they dont get low balled. also check with your insurance co to see if they offer a oem parts rider so if it something does happen they cant use aftermarket junk. But then again that might make the car total.

Pretty much sums it up Bob I have been in the BS biz since I was 17 seen it all. Its just a viscouis circle. Dont you love the ones who think there gonna make a buck on the repair between you and the ins co. I used to get tired of that kinda crap but anymore just laugh. Doom that is a very good question. I work in the insurance business and I will say that most companies would replace with a used wheel first. If that's unavailable then move to a new one. If that's not available then they would give you "fair market value" to replace how ever many were stolen. Truth be known I don't want to be at the mercy of the insurance company. I'd recommend to all to get these below. Fastblackmerc put me onto to these. I'm sure if someone wanted them bad enough they'd find a way but this will make them think twice. Plus if my alarm is going off (its very sensative to movement around car :D) it alerts my phone and remote. If that happens they might dig some led out there tail!
