I am hoping to get some good advice on this situation. It appears the past owner of my 03a stripped the #3 plug and it decided to blow out the other day. I am looking for a decent yet affordable repair.
I watched a couple videos on the calvan tools ford spark plug insert installer. Has anyone used this method. Any feedback about this repair would be greatly appreciated.

If its repairable your best options are a Helicoil, or tyme insert ,most shops can do this if your not comfortable doing the repair, its fairly easy

Unplug the injector on that cylinder if you are going to drive it anywhere. Secondly, the timesert would be your best bet, but most of them like the Snap-on kit are made for the 2V engine. The guide they give you is too short and you won't be able to drill and tap straight.
A Ford dealer will just wanna replace the head like they told me. See if you can find someone who did a repair on a 4V engine before.

I believe TIME-SERT is the only kit specifically authorised by Ford for dealer use to repair blown-out plugs, and they DO make a kit for the 4V. If I ever have that issue, it's the only way I'd go.

Looking at the last picture... not something you'll want to do with the head installed.

The kit I have has you close the valves and make sure the piston is down. Then it has a air line so you can blow out the metal shavings. You should use grease on the bit and the tap so it will catch most of them.

Had it happen and the Time-sert is what was used...Seems to me thats the only way to really get it done well

I had a plug blow out I took it to a local dealer to have a timesert put in. They completely detroyed the head. My advise would be to have someone with good experience in doing timeserts to do yours. So you dont end up buying a new head like me :(

Are you repairing the head on or off the car ?

keeping it on if possible,,, will use a scope to be certain that all filings are removed.
has anyone looked at this?http://www.denlorstools.com/home/dt1/page_634_273/calvan_tools_ford_spark_plug_i nsert_installer_cal3.html
The video makes it look pretty straightforward. my buddy/mechanic is reviewing the info now. I like how beefy the inserts are for this and the guide for straight drilling and tapping,,

Doesnt look like the tech messed the head up to me. Looks like the car was driven with a loose plug and the combustion burnt a slit in the plug hole like a torch. Anything can happen thats for sure.

I'd have to agree. I don't think the tech had anything to do with that. :( Will a sert fix that? Could have fracture lines going further into the head from there. You'd really have to pull that head. Magnaflux it to see how bad it is.

I have this kit from Snap-on The guide that comes with it is for the 2V engines and is too short for the 4V head. You have to really be careful when drilling or find a longer guide.

If it does, it probably wouldn't hold for long.

Mine does not look near as bad as the one pictured by kmastl. Just stripped threads,,
We are going to use the kit I referred to. I will take a lot of notes and pictures and post the procedure after its done with great success,, Hows that for positive thinking!!?? We will be using the CalVan Tools Ford Spark Plug Insert Installer CAL38900 wish me luck and I will post the results on Sunday.

How did this repair go? I am considering that same kit...
I work for ford and ive done helicoils to repair the heads.. Which is a common occurrence on the ford lightning.. It works really good.. Have a steady hand with the drill and drill as straight as possible. Install helicoil and don't forget to add loctite. I usually let it sit overnight then install the new plug.
