I'm getting ready to do the j-mod tomorrow with a Dirty Dog valve body plate/spring kit. I have access to a lift and I'm trying to avoid the transmission fluid shower. I bought a drain plug from napa and my question is this. I'd like to drill a hole in my transition pan while it's still attached to the trasmissiom and let the fluid drain out. I obviously want to be very careful about how far I drill but where in the pan do you put the drain plug? Can I do it in the hump thing towards the back of the pan? Bad idea?

That's where I welded mine. I would use a 3/16 very lightly to just tap that and drain it. I was going to do the kit you have and ended up just welding the nut that goes inside the pan so I have less possible leaks or loose nuts to worry about. (yeah, yeah... tap that, loose nuts...twss)

There's nothing in that little "well" in the bottom of the pan other than the snout on the bottom of the filter (and hopefully you're replacing the filter anyway), so you should be safe drilling there, just do the minimum necessary, etc.

On the factory-supplied "U-Haul" pans, they put the drain plug on the rear-facing part of that well, so that's the perfect place to install yours.

Just get a deep sump ART CARR tranny pan! Kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

1. It has a drain plug.
2. It holds 2 extra qts. of fluid....hence tranny runs cooler & fluid stays a little cleaner.
3. Add a little bling under your ride...aluminum with cooling fins...prettttty!!!!

Cost about $100-$150. Either go directly through Art Carr or DR sells em too & his is a little cheaper.

Buy a deep pan and be done with it.

What about if the car is lowered, Does the Art Carr pan have ground clearance issues?
I like the look of the Art Carr Pan, I am just worried that there may be some of the
clearance problems. Like using a Maroso Oil pan. Any thoughts on this ?
Thanks. Be safe

No clearance issues with the deep pan. My car is lowered and it clears perfect.
As a matter of fact, the kooks mid pipes are lower.

Moroso pan is a little bit deeper as it holds 3 qts. I had this pan on my P71. Go with Art Carr to be on the safe side. ;)

I installed mine and my 2nd set cats are lower than the pan. But you dropped your ride so I guess you might try to get dimensions of the pan & then measure before you purchase.

Just buy the U-Haul pan and be done with it.
Or a deeper pan which is more money

What is this UHaul pan you refer to? P/N?

Here is a pic of the pan and the part number from DR site. Hope this helps.

Not sure what the original part number is through Ford though. Might wanna try a google search "u-haul" transmission pan or just call your local stealership.

Ford installs a drain plug on all 4R70W-equipped vehicles delivered to U-Haul. The Ford P/N is F8UZ-7A194-AA. The pan is identical to the passenger car pan except for the addition of the drain plug. It does not increase fluid capacity.

Theres nothing in that little area. I just drilled a decent size hole on the rear side for the fluid to drain took the pan off and drilled the correct hole size for the plug. Something like $3 to do.
