Hi,
I wasn't sure If I should post in off-topic or wheels/tires but here it goes....
I posted on a Mercedes-Benz forum but people don't seem to be as knowledgeable as here...
Basically, what I want to know is.....is the 3% tire diff. between rear and front tires a general rule for all cars or is it specific to the marauder?
My old man likes the set up I have on my car (235/50/18 and 265/50/18) on the marauder and wanted to order wider tires for his 2002 SL 500.
The car is presently sitting on 245/45/17 on all four corners. I have ordered the following for him: 245/45/17 for the fronts and 275/40/17 for the rear. His rims are 8.25 " wide. According to my calculations the diameter of these tires is almost identical.
I am seeking some advice/ reassurance, as I don't want to screw over my poor old man LOL
As always, I appreciate the answers that will follow...

Don't know how the Benz is set up.
The CV and MGM T/C set-ups are designed for the same size tire on all four corners. Would prolly have problems if you tried to run staggered sizes on those cars.
The traction control algorithims have been coded on the Marauder to compensate for the stagger between the front and rear tires. The 3% difference is actually a range, can run from 3% up to about 5% without messing up the T/C.

First thing I note in your post is the difference in wheel size. Can we assume you ordered your dad new wheels too.
If the tire dia. sizes are close front and rear he shouldn't run into a problem. 275 should be OK on an 8.25 wheel but I would double check that just to be sure better safe than sorry.
What do the guys on the AMG forums think. They are the gear heads of the Mercedes crowd or like Bluerauder suggested run it past the dealer.
Just thought of an idea before I hit post, Check the owners manual it might have info on what you can and can't do as pertaining to the TC.

That's a mistake on my part. The tires/wheel combo should be 245/45/17 and 275/40/17, he is not upgrading wheels. I ended up doing some more research and got answers from the benz guys also. What I found out is that the 02 SL 500 can accommodate 285s out back no problem, I confirmed there was a sport option that came from the factory with 18s wheel and 245/40/18 and 275/35/18. Therefore, I don't see why my set up would affect TC or ABS. The only "problem" is the fact that I am putting 275s on a 8.25" rim. However, I am running 265s on a 8" rim and others on this site are running up to 295s on 8" rim. I haven't experienced any problems with my setup and I personally believe it has improved the ride/handling as well as offers a better protection for the rim against curb rash. Maybe If I were a professional driver my opinion may differ but thats not the case.

Remember it's not so much the wheel size that matters, it's tire diameter...more specifically it's the difference in F/R diameter.
As already stated, very few cars use a staggered setup from the factory like the Marauder. Depending on how traction control and/or ABS are implemented, a car that doesn't have a staggered setup may or may not tolerate a difference well.

Looking good. 275/40/17 is a very popular choice for mustangs... the Nitto DRs runs a lil smaller than other tires, and are perfect fit for the 8" rims. The non DRs do run a lil wider, but shouldn't be an issue on the 8.25" rims.
