We're ready to drop this thing in and now I'm being told by someone that the flywheel needs to be replaced with an 8 bolt??? Has anyone had to replace the flywheel putting one of these in??
(starting to twitch......):mad2:

Unless your merc is a manual tranny, you have a flex plate, not a flywheel.

Yes! If you have the stock torque converter, you need to drill that flexplate! Before he does any more work, you need to swap the oil pan an pickup tube also!!! See my thread here:

GM calls them flex plates. Ford calls them a flywheel, manual or automatic.

Do you really want to drill the flexplate??? I don't see nothing wrong with it as long as is a precise hole.

Buy an 8 bolt flexplate...I would NOT try to drill an extra 2 holes in the flexplate, if it is even possible without turning it into Swiss cheese.
I redrilled the holes in my 8 bolt flexplate (Cobra crank) to accomodate my Art Carr stall convertor, but that was only 4 holes and the were way out near the periphery of the flexplate....
not all bunched together in the center area of the flexplate.

It's NOT the center and it IS the periphery that needs the 4 new holes and it WORKS FINE. I hope no one would try to add holes near the center Joe! :) IF you use common sense! I would recommend anyone doing this to have a machine shop do it. If you are in a pinch, it can be done without any problems whatsoever...

Some one could drill the holes and install something something like this. I saw this once but on a 1500hp blown hemi.

I did it, and yes you need an 8 bolt (at the crank) flywheel/flexplate.
The Aluminator features the forged crank.

Also, when swapping the pickup tube, check the bolt holes on the oil pump, mine were cross threaded from the factory. Now I have to swap out the brand new oil pump. If I were swapping this into a Mustang I probably wouldn't have noticed because it uses a Mustang pan and tube, which may have been catastophic. The Aluminator is a good deal, but make sure to double check everything. Don't forget to drain the oil out of the pan before removing it.
