View Full Version : Q: How difficult is it to remove the factory short overhead console?

I've got this annoying squeak from the factory short overhead console that goes away when I place a little upward pressure on it; I'm guessing that a screw is loose and was wondering how difficult it would be to access the screws holding it place. For the record, the car has the "factory" moon-roof.
Thanks in advance!

Remove the screw at the front(closest edge to windshield), then pull the assembly down, it is held on with clips....

Yeah, and you might have to pull fairly hard, the Ford design engineers must have been worried about it falling off, the spring clips in that rascal grip pretty tight.

Open overhead console light M-80, place M-80 in console, close console and get out of car. Quickly!!

Thank you for the response, I'll try and tackle it tomorrow if I have the opportunity.

Hmmm... maybe it's just the screw in the front is loose and causing the squeaking, considering how difficult everyone says it is to remove due to the spring clips SC Cheesehead...

He means use leds in there instead of the existing bulbs.

I maybe scared you off, didn't mean to. :o
The console is definitely removeable, just don't be surprised if you've got to give it a couple pretty good tugs. IIRC, I ended up using a rag and screwdriver to pry down on one corner to get mine off.

I'm going to wear gloves next turn.
I cut my hand pulling on it!
I have to go in there again, it's dark !(the readout)

I hear you, Bradley!
Hey, if you need to replace the readout, checkout this link for parts:

You mean the resistor that comes loose?
If it is the resistor you may need a new one since the solder pads are very small and are easily burned off. I have resistors if you need one or you can send the console to me for a fix.

Yes it was fixed for a couple months and went dark again.
I'm only guessing the resistor came loose again.
You sent me a PM for a new part, I just have been lazy

Does one just simply swap LED's in place of the standard bulbs, or it a wiring upgrade involved? If it's a simple swap, any idea what the part number(s) are?
Thanks in advance 1stMerc!

Well I looked at it today while stuck in traffic on the FDR Drive and couldn't even find the screw on the front! :o I did notice that the squeak was located a little to the left on the console between the headliner and space where the sliding cover meets. By the time I got home it was way to dark to look in the space, but I'll have a look ASAP.

The short consoles on the '04's don't have a screw in front as you discovered. The '03's long console has a screw in front and two screws in back compartment.

Mine has a torx screw in front and was hard to pull down as has been mentioned!!!:argue::mad2:
Do yourselves a favor and squeeze the metal clips in a little with pliers so removal won't be as violent should you have to pull it down again!!:D

Since there aren't any visible screws, do I just pull it down carefully fastblackmerc?

The hardest part is to get your fingers between the headliner and the console. Once you get your fingers in there (either side), pull down. It will sound like your breaking the console but it will come down.
