Vibration when driving.
Grab the tie rod end and try to move it.
You should have side to side movement ONLY!
If it moves up and down you have a bad tie rod.

Remember most big stores make money on selling you other "things" while they have your car in the shop.

If you don't or can't do your own work, I'd suggest finding a good independent mechanic. Talk to friends, neighbors, join a local Mustang forum and ask for recommendations, etc. If you establish a good a good relationship with them your less likely to get ripped off.

Just have them show you the problem? If it's legit, then they can't warranty an alignment on a loose front end. Most shops are (around here at least) are legit thanks to all the news media showing scams.
When I was wrenching we had to deal with skeptic people almost daily and we would take that time to explain in detail exactly what went wrong and offer up the old parts for inspection. We gained a very strong client base with excellent relations.
