I am wondering what purpose the curved tube (I have heard it referred to as a "walrus tooth") on the stock intake plumbing of my '04 MM serves...is it to make the incoming air flow quieter by baffling it in some way? or might it be for another reason?
Thanks for the info.

It's too help silence the intake tract.

Yup, it's a muffler.

You can remove it and plug the hole with a number of different items (jamestang79 used a breather cap from a Chebbie, I had a plastic disc I got from Joe Walsh, some other folks have sawed off the closed end, inverted it, pushed the stub into the hole and used a large hose clamp to secure), and it will make some intake noise at WOT.

I plugged mine by cutting off about 2" of the closed end of the resonator and clamped that in the hole closed side out.

I knew someone had done it, just couldn't recall who. ;)

Thanks for the info as always.
When we move on into fall, the drought in Texas eases a bit (hopefully) and we can pay less for water, a cold air intake, some 4:10's, and a computer tune will be on my radar.
As per now, it is bloody hot and dry here in the hill country.

Along with the new front spoiler, I also got the K & N intake installed this weekend...now to save up some funds for the next step...either rear gears or a computer programmer.
Again, thanks for all the help this last year that I have had the '04 MM.

The best intake is the OEM.

I used the lid from a medium jar of Jiffy peanut butter and kinda screwed it on and didn't leak any air.

So sealing this "walrus tooth" has zero effect on emissions/engine power, but does increase WOT intake noise correct? Just making sure, thanks in advance everyone!

Yup, but make sure it's sealed. Any air leaks and you'll throw a code.

This mod plus a CAI will definitely increase intake noise at WOT.

When my brother in law and I bought our cars we went right to the Home Depot and each got (I believe) a 2" inch standard white plastic pipe cap -painted it black and it fits right in the hole perfectly. Then a regular screw clamp and it almost looks stock. That was the very first mod we did to our Marauders in Sept. 2003 and it came from MM.Net :)

When you are at Home Depot also get some silver/metal gutter gard and use it to fill the openings on the lower air dam. I believe they bolt on down their and it looked cool. I havent done it yet but I am going too. I believe this one is from MM.Net also.

Just curious, have you done the aforementioned mod yet Bad Merc?

I bought 3 pieces of the gutter guard.

One piece went here

Other two go here in the large opening

That looks smashing fastblackmerc!

So did you just purchase the gutter guard material and sandwich it using the stock hardware and trimming where necessary?

No trimming and use the stock hardware.

How do you fasten that down again? (Yes, I searched under gutter guard)

The grill piece is bent around a 4" piece of PVC tube to get the correct shape then it just fits right into place... no attachments.

The 2 bottom pieces are secured with the existing hardware.
