at the end of last summer my a/c stopped working. didnt know why never really looked at it until the un bareable heat. i recharged the system yesterday with one of those bennys special a/c recharge kits with the plastic gauge for 36 bucks. the compressor cycled in short bursts but came on. i looked at the ambient temp. chart on the bottle and filled it up accordingly. it said about 55psi at 85-90deg temp. i then went into the car and hot air was still blowing out. compressor was still cycling for about 5 seconds then shutting off every 20 seconds or so. i then tried turning the temp. up and the a/c off. after about a minute if the a/c being turned off i heard a pppppiiisssssssttttttstttstt under the hood. by the time i got out and looked i couldnt see anything. the gauge then read 0 again. should the compressor cycle longer? could this be an EATC issue not changing from hot to cold? why did it hold pressure then just let go? is there a pressure relief valve somewhere? any help would be much apreaciated

Sounds like there was too much pressure and the relief valve vented it.

It could be anything from the compressor, evaporator, accumulator, etc.

By not fixing it right away you may have caused more damage.

I'd take it to a competent repair shop.

the compressor cycling quickly like that means it is low on refrigerant. take it to a shop.
