It sure would have been nice if these cars had one. Why I was following behind a semi recently (it was one lane each direction) that was bellowing out this black smoke. I could smell it in the car and probably got cancer, just kidding.

Gotta use the "max" on a/c setting!

I dunno if a cabin filter would've helped with those conditions with the semi?

I'll check with Travis. I think he said he had one or an idea about one.

Ca. use to have a hotline you can call to report offenders?

Did they give up on it?

Pretty much the black smoke from the exhaust of a diesel is a sign of un-burn fuel. It's time to clean the injectors:) Wasted fuel cost money in the big rigs since they opnly get about 6-8 MPG on a good day?

I love the fact that removing of catalytic converters are illegal but people can drive around with clouds of black and blue cancer causing smoke. I'm gonna sue for a billion

You might want to remove the cowl and take a look at that vent section on the passenger side. It gets pretty crudy under there with willow, helicopter leaves and other small debri.

I agree Waymon. Also while you have it off, measure the fresh air duct on the far passenger side top and maybe wedge a HEPA filter from a vacuum in there. Just don't block too much flow.

If your refering to truck or busses then no not really most states have a "smoke" test (at lest NJ & Pa do)

About 5 months I was returning from a one way drop off at BWI below Baltimore (Troops from Fr.Dix) and the turbo failed at the toll plaza at Perryville (I-95 north).....Talk about State Troopers comming out of the woodwork!
Anyway the big coach put out enough smoke to hid a tractor trailer. Needless to say they pulled me off the highway and next day the coach was towed back to Jesey:o

Sometimes stuff happends:eek:

Correct, or a fuel pump turned up, clogged air filter, leaking intake manifold gaskets, clogged up turbo, or the DFE filter is clogged and the engine is in limp mode til its regenerated.
If I get 4-5mpg in my tractor I would be lucky. I pushed 380 miles out of a 68 gallon tank when I went out to Harrisburg PA and I was able to clearly see the bottom of it when I got back to the yard.

NY does it as part of inspection and at DOT stops. They drop the probe in and tell you to go from idle to WOT to take a measurement. Mack had the bright idea of a puff eliminator on the mechanical engines that holds the rack with air pressure til you get about above 1000 RPM's. Its designed to stop that initial puff of smoke when starting out. It never worked and cut the power back.
We had a truck suck in something to completely destroy the impellor of the turbo. It had no power and looked like a locomotive coming down the road. We also had a older mack with the fuel pump turned all the way up that the engine would turn 2600 RPMs and just pumped out the black smoke when under a load. I used to lug it down in the city when I was next to those open air double decker tourist buses. ;)

When I lost my idler pulley and threw a belt on the NJ/PA border a few months ago, I had to buy tools and trek out 45 miles to the nearest Mack dealer for parts to replace it. Turns out the torx head they use to hold the plastic pulley was stripped out by the previous owner of the truck. I had no choice but to get it back to the shop so we left the tractor in a closed down movie theater parking lot, I had to catch a ride with another driver then go back that night with a lowbed to bring it back. No way we were shelling out $1500 for a NJ to NY tow.

No that one was the turbo. And yes it was towed back to Bristol, Pa. the next day.(I know I said NJ) The Company did send a another driver to pick me up:) that night. Funny thing was the coach was running find all day? Just after I backed off comming into the toll booths is when it went south:mad: One Trooper was in my face like a DI at boot camp. I just gave him a blank look, not much else I could do that night. Any way the Company got over $1800. in tickets for that and few other issues they found.

As for MPG... MCI which is the make I drive most times get between 7.5 & 9.5 MPG's and in the last 10 years or so they come with a 242 gallon fuel tank.

Engine's are Detroit, Cummings or Cat! A Cat with ZF 12 speed is the highest in the MPG range.
