View Full Version : HELP!...Nitrous or Supercharger?

I've been thinking about a trilogy for a while, but $7,000 is kind of a long shot for me to save up for.
Lately I've been thinking about a nitrous setup (100-125 dry) and was wondering what you guys think about the pros/cons?
I know about the hassle of having to get the bottle refilled and warming it up, but for a fraction of the price of a trilogy installed and tuned, seems to make sense as an option for cheaper horsepower and torque.
The things with a supercharger that seem good are the powerband (not just on WOT) and the sound of an eaton whine!
Anyways, I hope you guys see where I'm coming from and I would appreciate any advise!
Do what works best for you and your BUDGET.

Search button is your friend. Lots of options. I went with Trilogy before the price hike, and it was expensive then!

Nitrous = power as long as you've got gas in the bottle.
SC = power on demand
Have you considered an Eaton swap? $3,500 to $4,500 for the parts, cost for installation depends on how mechanically inclined you are, but it would be basically the same if you went with a Trilogy (i.e. DYI or have someone else install it for you).

I'm with the SC crowd. But Lowbuckmm had a tune for nittrous. He made 380+hp and 480something torque on a 100 shot. I foregot what his best 60' time is but it was pretty quick.
Maybe he'll chime in as I think he wants to sell his nitrous kit.

Supercharger. I have nitrous. Up to a 150 shot so far. It's a pita. I wish I'd just listened to all the guys on here that had already been through what I repeated after and just gone the sc route. Doomed to repeat history. ;) This time I'm doing it right. I have two spare engines I'm working on, a complete Eaton sc kit that I'm taking my time on improving, all the correct upgrades that go with making 520+rwhp...
The SC is the best bet. I like the power of the SC don't have to worry about the SC being empty!!!!

I've enjoyed my nitrous on my older 04.

I'll tell you. The big difference is nitrous comes on fast and hard with no stopping it. The s/c is more gradual.
On my 04, nitrous was a blast, especially in rush hour traffic. s/c is the way to go but for $2K its not a bad first mod.

I have had nitrous on the MM. I had a nitrous tune, 150 shot and 555R drag radials. I ran consistent low 13s, but my times would fluctuate GREATLY with heat and humidity. I ran through lots of bottles and a transmission before I sold it. If I had to do it again, I think I would have done the eaton swap due to the stock look, power on demand and sound. That's me though, nitrous was very fun with the on/off, but...just didn't feel real.

My twin screw comes on @ 1800 and doesn't quit till 6500, now maybe throw a small 2 or 300 shot with the ts, hmmmmmm.

Possible solenoid failure on the nitrous setup always botherd me.
One sticky solenoid and.......!
What does it cost to fill those bottles these days?
I say S/C,
no refills nessecary.

I run a 10 lbs centrifugal kit from Reinhart Automotive for day to day operation coupled with a 3500 stall converter, 4:10 gears and dyno tune. For strip I have a wet 50 shot to cool the intake charge and a little added umph. Works for me.
The S/C kit was 4 K including tune if they installed it. Installation fee was nominal.
It was a turn key operation but you have to leave the car for a while.
The kit is a non intercooled version and didn't require any invasive manipulation of the engine.
If you come to Marauderville, I'm sure there are many different varieties of S/C, nitrous application to test.

like other have said nitrous is a VERY good bang for the buck. on motor my car did 276hp and 299ft lb at the rear wheels. on a 100 shot 373hp and 483ft lb. now lets see anyone get those numbers for under a grand. the real key to nitrous is to get a tune for it. i have a best run of 12.40 @108 mph with a 1.6 60foot on drag tires. the tune help alot. but also take into effect that its about $40 a refill and you only get about 5 to 6 good runs in at the track(i only spray at the track) befor your bottle pressure starts to go down. if you like power all the time go a differnt route. if you like going to the track for some fun times nitrous would work like it does for me. if you have any other questions just ask me or anyone else dont matter.

when installing a nitrous set up.....I got replies from 2 very well recognized MM authotities....#1 says wet kit,75 shot,no dyno tune REQUIRED...1 degree cooler plugs,180 thermostat and GO...#2 says, install kit and dyno tune.(dyno tune being like additional $350.....If I were to install a wet kit with 75HP nozzles and a dyno tune,I would have to change tunes with my xcal3....every time I wanted to spray and then switch back to a different xcal tune every time ....comments????? also, expert #1 says more than 75shot and may have to pull 2 degrees timing..

Since nobody replied,I'll pose this as a question...with a nitrous tune can you drive around without spraying the NO....? Some of you experienced nitous guys,do you keep switching tunes or is it just like at the track, you use your NO tune and then back to tune #1?.....so,no nitous on the fly??

Of course you can drive around with the same tune for spray without using the NO.
PM Lowbuckmm for more info. He had his tuned for NO.

I think theres a switch to arm the nitrous system...and then theres also a WOT switch for when the system is armed to run the nitrous.

He also only ran a "can" tune for over a year without incident and ran consistant 12.7's IIRC.

Thanks for the replies gents...I guess the dyno tune would be ideal but,not absolutely needed.

I'd say better safe than sorry. More power, and more reliability, can't go wrong. If 350 bucks is what's stopping you from purchasing, just think of how much it'll cost if you mess something up.
In addition to the wide open throttle switch, there are 2 more switches that you can get, to make it a bit safer. 1st is a fuel pressure safety switch; won't turn on the nitrous solenoid unless there's enough pressure. The 2nd is a digital rpm window switch, where you set up the spray to come on between x and y RPM numbers. Between those two, the window switch and a tune, you will be 1 grand in. 6 grand left over will fill a lot of bottles...

Agreed.
IMO, gonna be happier in the long run with a blower set up.

A dyno tune for a 50 to 75 wet shot isn't necessary if you do NOT already have any kind of aftermarket (not stock) tune in the pcm. If you have a tune, the timing is advanced to get a few extra ponies and this is where you would be in danger. If stock, you have enough room for it. You could always get two tunes from a dyno showp. One for street and one for strip. You could get a tune with advanced timing and for nitrous with a higher octane fuel for the track. Just remeber, if you ever forget to put the right tune in or race fuel, etc. you can get detonation. All of the above is why I'm supercharging and got rid of my nitrous. You're relying on extra things to be working properly. As someone mentioned, what if your fuel seloenoid doesn't open? Because of a corroded wire, a bad seloenoid, a dead relay... Others are running N2O A-OK. It's a decision you need to really think about and take your time with. I should have listened to everyone that told me two years ago, sc it and be done with it! ;)
