View Full Version : Done being a good samaritan

This actually happened Thursday night, but didn't want to post until I had the pics up. Was on my way to get some groceries on the way home Thursday night in Worcester and witnessed a hit and run.

The hitter was a late 90's Nissan, possibly a Sentra, the hittee was a newer Lincoln Town Car and I believe it was a livery vehicle. At the intersection before the accident, the Nissan was trying to race me, I had my windows up and could care less, my mind was set on food.

Well, the Nissan flew past me and at the next intersection could see it plow into the back of the Lincoln, so much so, I swear the rear of the Nissan went up upon impact.

I was about to pull over to tell the driver of the Lincoln I was a witness, when I saw the Nissan turn around and take off like a bat out of hell. Without even thinking, I went after the Nissan to get the plate to report it.

Got the plate and reported it, but just before I got the last digit into my phone, the jerk took me through roads that were under construction. Both of us bottomed out pretty bad, I saw sparks from the entire width of his rear end. I couldn't hit the brakes fast enough and after stopping(after I got the plate), found that my evap canister was gone and the metal cage around it was hanging by 2 hoses. Someone was nice enough to give me a few zipties to get the piece off the ground and get home. I have since just removed the whole thing for now.

Think my ride height sensor got bent as I haven't heard the compressor kick in that much since and the ride is a lil rougher on bumps. Other than that and the evap, I think/hope she's ok.

Figured I'd share the pics I took the next morning:

Darn, forgot 1 thing: Trunk is dented in from the underside a lil bit now. Caused my subwoofer box to not sit flat in the trunk anymore. Wasn't too pissed at that though since my amp died last week.

That sux... They at least arrest him for a hit and run?

After using zipties to hold up the remnants of the evap, I drove by where it happened hoping the Lincoln was still there but was already gone. No idea if anyone in the Nissan got arrested, stopped following as soon as I got the last digit of the plate, could hear something dragging from my car at that point, but wasn't sure what.

jstevens: it was 11:30 at night and never got to see the driver other than their silouette, just looked likely like a female from the back because all I saw what appeared to be afro-puffs.

RacerX: I did call 911 after someone urged me to call that versus the non-emergency number. I was able to give them the full plate, make, likely model and year range and what direction they were going when I broke off pursuit.

Considering these cars look so much more cop-ish at night, I'd venture to say they were essentially evading police. I just wish I could find out what their story was, no insurance? That's moot now. Drugs? maybe, it was Worcester. Suspended license? dunno, but if so, it ain't coming back anytime soon now.

I keep checking the court section of the local paper to see if there's anymore info.

Check with the local PD I'm sure that the Lincoln filed a report for ins purposes. Maybe he would flip you a few bucks towards repairs. Ya never know.

I was wondering about that and if they'd actually give me any info.

A few people I spoke to mentioned a possible reward, but I was highly doubting anything close. A few bucks towards the new(junkyard) evap would be nice, but I'm more concerned about what the outcome of my call was. Just want that person off the roads.

So when you go to the PD take a dozen donuts with you! :D

0uCh-oUcH-0UCH... I can't even imagine how hard you hit your MARAUDER, I'm sure those roads were pretty bad because our suspension does a pretty good job of taking hits. Hope you get it fixed soon and the damage isn't that expen$ive!

Luckily my best bud is a great tech at Acton Lincoln Mercury(promised I'd plug it every time I mention him), told me this can be had from a GM at the junkyard. He just has to come up with a new way of holding the new-old evap in place since the original tabs all sheared.

Yeah it was an intersection that dipped pretty deeply, I also think there may've been a raised manhole cover considering the damage was restricted to an area about that size.

And to be honest, while I was chasing the guy and this happened, I actually thought that I had ripped off my front bumper and was dragging either a fog or headlight and not the evap.

If you need some tabs or something welded, I'm only about 15 minutes down the road

I definitely would prefer tabs so the junkyard piece will mount up normally, plus that would be as close to factory as possible. Just didn't like the idea of drilling through the trunk to mount it. I appreciate the offer and will likely take you up on it....don't suppose you'd know a good way to undent the trunk so it's flat inside too?

A BFH. Seriously, that's what a body shop will do. If you can't get the floor as flat as it was, a sheet of plywood under the carpet will fix it.

CARNAGE! I saw this piece up close and personal. Not pretty.

Nice catching up with you the other day!

domesttuner: I as hoping that'd be the case, in which case, not going to pay a shop to do. Thanks for the tip with the plywood.

TJ/Egon: Same to you man. That bike is gorgeous! Haven't been around bikes in a long time and had no idea Suzuki made something so sweet looking.

Thanks buddy. I try to keep her as clean as possible. It is such a beautiful bike that I won't ride it until it is spotless because I don't want to be seen on a gorgeous bike that is filthy! hahaha. Definitely is a head turner. It caught my eye! haha

Nice job, my friend.

Thanks SergntMac, it's tough though as when I try to be the good samaritan and I get bit in the ass like that. But I just can't not do something when I witness such an event.

Just got a quote from a local junkyard. For around $80, they will pull the Fuel Vapor Canister, surrounding metal cage, solenoid, hoses and wiring up into the trunk. Does that sound like an ok deal?

Just ordered it. Came to $79.69 and they'll have it pulled around this time tomorrow. Just hope the guy understands and made note that I need the wiring up into the trunk including the whole pigtail too.

And why would you say that?

I missed that one. I was thinking warrants or drugs and/or alcohol was the cause of them running.

Cake to fix. Rubber Mallet for the trunk, pick up a new evap cage.

These cars were ment for jumping and abuse. I'm sure its fine other than those few items.

Well if you are going to call out people for being "prejudice" you are going to be a busy boy around here.

Don't forget to call out your "friends" too.

Took them longer to get it and my comp was offline until now, but I'm so psyched now, looks like they chiseled off the large metal tab along with the unit, so hopefully that can be straightened out and welded on, leaving only the 2 small tabs to be fabbed up.

I got your pm, sorry it took so long. I have a some more welding to do on my car, and my gas is low...once that's done I'll let you know and it'll be no problem getting the new tabs welded up

Either way jstevens is prejudice.

I am prejudiced against all people that drive without a license. It could be a felony, depending on the circumstance. Also, they would likely be uninsured.
