Do your homework! Seriously! There are some very nice LOOKING areas that are not the best places to be. Check local law enforcement stats! There are lots of great resources online. What counties are you considering?

Ditto... decide how much of a commute you can tolerate as well.

Sorry about your luck, if there is anyway to avoid this move do it now.
Welcome to the 'People's Republic of Maryland' where you will be unfairly taxed until you are dependent upon the govt. and remember they know what is best for you.

Welcome to the area! I work at Fort Meade and have been trying to help people with these same questions that have been through BRAC.
Where to live depends a lot on what you can afford, whether you have school age kids and how far you want to drive. Send me a PM if you want some information about the area and I'll send you my number.

My sister works in D.C. and lives in Bowie, Maryland, Montgomery County......every time we talk, the subject of all the taxes (state, county and city) and regulation interference in her life. She counting down the time she has to stay before she can leave................
Good luck to you, and hold on to your wallet..........

Welcome to California Lite!
If you have kids, your priority will most likely be the area/County with the best schools.
Howard and Montgomery Counties have the best schools and are also the most expensive to live in.
(Personally, having grown up there, I hate Montgomery County...Way too friggin' crowded!)
If you don't have kids, your priority should be the easiest commute and knowing the local traffic (i.e. gridlock) patterns.
I now live in Severn (Anne Arundel County) which is a decent area that is literally 5 minutes from Fort Meade on local roads.
Want to buy my house and I'll move to Texas?
Hang on to your shorts when you see the housing prices in Maryland!!
Hope to meet you at a CAM function!

Along with what Joe said if you have kids you can look farther north as well. Harford County has schools comparable with Howard and Montgomery but the cost of living is significantly cheaper and houses of the same size are half the price.
The negative to that is it'll takes about 45 minutes to get to work.
If you have no kids then there is a really nice area right outside of the Mapes road gate in Russett, MD. Fort Meade also seems to have some of the nicer base housing I've seen since you're in the military.
Good luck with the move!

Welcome to MD! I moved here from Michigan in 2004 and like it a lot, except for the HORRIBLE beltway bandits. FWIW, I did make the mistake of first moving to a "nice looking" area that ended up being not so safe (Owings Mills). Crime seems to venture surprisingly deep into the Baltimore suburbs. Talking to the folks at your work will be a good place to start. My family is up in Perry Hall, which we like a lot. Its probably a bit to far from Ft. Mead though. Hope to meet you at a MM event soon.
I'll also take the opportunity to plug the Cars and Coffee I'm trying to establish at The Filling Station in Hunt Valley. Sundays from 8-noon.
