Maybe I missed something, But I never thought you were supposed to shift an automatic.. for performance anyways(yes I know they have autos with paddle shifters but what hes doing is different) Is this bad for the engine? Sorry if im wrong ive just never heard of this and only thought the other gears were for climbing hills or descending them.. anyways besides the odd shifting, I love the exhaust. Is this guy a member? :D

I do it sometimes, all it is is 1st and 2nd gear as long as you shift b4 you redline your fine....I personally like the feeling when your in 2nd gear at about 35mph and hit the throttle and it snaps you back....

I'll be 100% honest with you here:

Now that I actually drive a stick shift car,

I feel completely silly that I used to do that.

At least when I wasn't purposely trying to stay in a gear for some reason (a la roll race)....

yeah I think I get it now. You would do this to get the rpms up higher so you could avoid shifting sooner?

You could, but the better way to do that is in the tuning.

I think my Lidio tune used to shift around 6,250 RPM, and I'm pretty sure Zack tuned his setups much higher than that even. You HAVE to play into the strength of the DOHC if you ever hope to get this thing moving fast, and its strongest point is high-rev power.

I did it because I didn't want to have to downshift a gear at 45 to run in 2nd gear (it would normally be downshifting 2 gears, but the smart MM owner knows to turn off O/D before any serious spirited driving that may involve frequent shifting. ;) )

Mine will downshift to 1st at 39 with just a stab. Hold on for a thrill ride... No converter till 65 in OD only, no OD till 53. LOVE IT! Thanks Zack!

In most stock vehicles the trans will upshift far earlier than the engine peaks in HP so manual shifting will improve acceleration(or lower ET at the strip, whichever is your bag)... I juggled springs in the valve body of the AOD in my T-Bird but never got the 2-3 upshift as high as I wanted, manual shifting would give a .1 decrease in ET at the strip... As prev mentioned, unless one just wants to hold a gear, isn't much to be gained from manual shifting a Marauder with a tune and J-mod...

They make manual valve bodies for automatics that require you to manually shift them.

The hot setup is "reverse pattern", which means that 1st is forward, and you have to pull back to shift the car. Theory is that it's easier to pull backwards with the G's from acceleration than it is to push forward against the Gs.

This is generally for track-only, or track-mostly cars BTW.

I was gonna say I thought it sounded a lot like your old Marauder....but I guess you would have said if you thought it was your old one.

Yeh mine had a fair bit more exterior modification than the one in the video, plus an aftermarket radio. Why anyone would want to swap back a crappy factory unit, I'd have no idea.

For OP, that ^ was my Marauder while I still owned it. At around 50 seconds in, you see me do a pass by, and I forced it into 2nd before I punched it then kept it there briefly after I let off the throttle, which you can hear in the (delicious) off-throttle rasp.

I still couldn't whole-heartedly recommend doing it, even if I did it myself...

I manually shifted a few times. I have upgraded springs and valve body plate. I can sometimes get a 2nd gear chirp by just leaving it in drive and going WOT, but manually shifting it chirps 2nd everytime. Also there is a delay in the shift, If you wanna hit the shift at 6400 you better throw the gear at around 5800.

Not good for the tranny and did nothing for my ET at the track.

Yup, ask me how I know... ;)
